2002 S60 Passenger Side Rear CV Axle

Post by hapyendin »

I just bought a 2002 S60 AWD yesterday knowing that it had two major problems. One problem was the dash cluster was completely dead. I fixed this by taking the cluster out and getto reflowing the gauge cluster's mainboard chips with a hotair rework station at my buddies house. After I fixed the gauge cluster, I received a "Anti-Skid Service Required" message from the gauge cluster message center.

This brings up the biggest of the two problems. There is a horrendous vibration and noise coming from the rear of the car at slow-medium and medium-high speeds (The noise doesn't escalate anymore at +60 mph). The problem almost completely goes away when turning right. The very honest individual I bought this car from thought it might be a rear wheel bearing. To me, it feels like the type of vibration that happens right before a drive line explodes.

So, I throw it up on jack stands and start to feel around. Both rear wheels are totally solid in the vertical 12, 6 and the 3, 9 horizontal end play test. So I spin them. The drivers side rear wheel feels alright with only a minimal scraping on the brake pads. The passenger side however, is definitely different. It spins alright in the forward direction (It's a little grindy), but at soon as you spin it back, there's an audible Click. Sounds like a bad CV axle to me, right? I don't know, that's why I am writing this.

I needed a car, so I started looking. I love AWD's because historically I've driven a lot in really icy winter conditions. I'm really cheap so I always try to find the best deal. The Bluebook value of a 2002 S60 AWD with 130,000 miles in my area is $2800 (Owner not dealer sale). Can you believe that? A vehicle that is considered "luxury" and AWD, turbo, leather, etc(I know its 13+ year old) is only worth $2800. I got this car for a lot less then Bluebook. Yes I did my research. I know this year and model tend to have transmission issues and gauge cluster problems among other things. But I'm a gambling man, and I want to win.

I've fallen for this car. I'm a gritty, dirty, bastard and I want to drive this glorious car into the ground. Please help me. What do you think?

I tried to use the "search" feature, for the life of me nothing I entered (literally) had any results. I would really like to see some guides on rear CV axles replacement for the 2002 s60. You always see front CV replacement but never the rear. I know its' got to be simpler. It would just be nice to have a frame of reference for the procedure. Anyway...

-Thanks

I took it to the local tire place for a free inspection. They say the vibration is the right rear wheel bearing. They quoted me $365 for the bearing. I am going to do it myself for a saving of $300+. Hopefully the car will be good to go for awhile.
