Matty's 1998 v70xc one week project car

Post by Matty Moo »

I picked this up a few weeks back from auction. 1998 XC wagon. 170k, clapped out steering and suspension, nice body, misfiring all over, no speedo, blown IC hoses, Has heated back seats and oak interior that is 7/10. Good tires with even tread. Underbody is coated with oil from a loose oil drain plug with no crush washer.

This is for a friend that needs a car. I have one week to do it.

Immediately changed the oil and flushed the trans and ps fluid. Distributor cap, wires and plugs all need replaced, entire front end needs replaced also. All the brake pads are hosed, so they'll be replaced as will the rotors if they can't be turned.

ABS module was shot and the right front wheel sensor was unplugged. That was fixed In 20 minutes.

Nice looking car, I tore most of it apart tonight. We'll see what happens. Parts were ordered tonight, I plan on having the mechanicals done by Monday. It will be completely washed, clayed, polished and waxed by next Friday. Then it goes to Colorado.

Back in 2008 this would have taken me a month or more . After having about 13 of these I can have parts ordered in an hour. Putting it all together should go smoothly, I sprayed it down tonight with pb blaster.

As of tonight I'm $700 in and 12 beers into it.

Heated back seats, cool. I passed on a 98 XC "Little Red Wagon" edition last week with heated oak rears. A mechanic friend offered it to me for $200 when the owner balked at the repair expense and gave the car to the mechanic. It had a blown head and had been sitting for a year and was just beat. He let me pick at it before he junked it but I just couldn't get motivated to pull the rear seats. I don't really need them anyway, my kids are pretty much past rear seat age.

My last project took me all summer to fix, at one week you are lightning fast.

It's all Bolt on parts that I've done a few times in the past. I remember my first 850 wagon took a month just to replace the same stuff.

Is the rear drive working on this particular one?

One side done. This thing is corroded.... Snapped the pinch bolt for the control arm, somebody had already cut off the end link but left the ends because they were so corroded.

Air tools make things happen.

I'm drinking while doing this, so after both sides are done then I'll disassemble the brakes. The rotors are getting turned on Tuesday and I'll put the brakes together then.

Tonight.... Finish the front end and possibly get the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, a couple of IC hoses and take apart the rear brakes.

One of my friends is dropping off a 12-pack of Miller lite, that's Like drinking water for me. If I had my usual IPA's I'd get nothing done.
