2000 V70 XC AWD Reverse-Turn Clunk MVSOLVED VC

Post by rubbie »

This one has me stumped. My wife's V70 XC AWD gives out a clunk in the rear-left whenever she backs up and swings to the right to get out of her parking spot. Sometimes it's mild, and sometimes it sounds like an imminent failure.

All the suspension components are tight, bushings are fine, strut seats seem in good order. The CV boots are in one piece and the joints seem okay, no sloppiness. The axleshaft slides medially and laterally in and out of the rear diff a little bit. The main driveshaft seems tight.

I've tried holding my phone out the passenger door and out the tailgate as she backs up to video what I can, and the axleshaft doesn't move when the clunk happens. Nothing moves that I can see, but I can't see very much from those angles. I'm at the last resort - asking for advice.

Any ideas? Love to hear them.

Rear parking brake shoes or a sticking brake caliper. For the first, remove the rear rotor and check the shoe has not come loose.

Also check the bushing at the front of the Viscous coupling unit and the bearing at the front of the housing.

Check the prop=shaft support bearing in the middle of the shaft.

i had that same symptom. Ended up being a bushing holding the viscous coupling up. its located under the car, in the center line below the front seat backrests. It is a bolt holding up a bushing that is pressed into the viscous coupling.
I purchased the part, but it required more work than i was willing to put on, so i watched the old stuff. There was no space to press it off without removal (or better tools maybe)

the viscous coupling always engages in reverse, and when you turn you create load on the shaft that shakes the bad support.

And the winner is ... the viscous coupling bushing! :D Thanks for the help. I like to be sure about these things, so I stuck my phone onto the end of a clamp and video''d the bad boy in action. Can't seem to find a way to post it, though.

Off to find a new bushing. Then back here to find out how to install it. Love this site.
