2008 s80 separating knuckle from ball joint
I'm attempting to take care of a knocking noise from the front end of my sons recently purchased 2008 s80. I've purchased new struts, strut mounts and strut bearings. Having disconnected the steering arm, axle half shaft I'm left with disconnecting the knuckle in order to lower the strut down. This being the newer platform s80 the ball joint stud goes through the knuckle. How do you disconnect the knuckle. I've tried hammering on the joint, heating it to no avail. Pickle forks don't fit and normal ball joint removal tools do not fit either. Help!

I have a recollection of seeing quite some time back a you tube video which showed a bottom ball joint being separated by the use of a suitable height but compact bottle jack fitted between the control arm and, i think? the base of the strut.
Packers (timber) were utilized also.
Pumping the jack applied pressure on the top face of control arm with the bolt on the ball joint undone which forced the joint to separate with the downward movement of the arm.
I,m sorry but I cant be specific as to where I saw this video nor can I provide you the link to it.
It did do the job required no problem and without damage to the ball joint dust boot.

I'm not familiar with the 2008, but the OEM ball joints on many previous S80 models have a Torx socket in the end of the ball joint's stud. Use a long Torx bit and a box wrench to remove the nut and the knuckle should be free. It's easy to miss unless you have the vehicle on a lift.

The P3 ball joint goes into lower control arm into a split hole with pinch bolt. You remove pinch bolt, tap a chisel into the split to open it for ease but it is not necessary, and pry down the lower control arm. There is no tapered stud or hammering beyond the chisel relief of the pinch hold.
