2004 V70 2,5T Exhaust smell in cabin and exhast noise a idle

Post by mobjunky »

Hi, when car is idling there is obvious exhaust leak sound coming from the engine bay, around the exhaust manifold/turbo area. The funny thing is, it sounds like a valve is closing and opening cyclically when the car idles for a while, which makes the leak noise go away and come back on. I.e. there is leak noise, then a click and the noise goes away for some seconds plus the rev's change slightly, then another click and the noise comes back on for some seconds and rev's go back, then a click again....

If it was a diesel I would have suspected the EGR and a leaking return hose, but there is no such thing on a petrol engine?

Also, there is definitely exhaust fumes entering the cabin when the car is still and idling, but not when driving. Closing the cabin air recycle keeps the fumes out.

Finally, there is a deep rumble when accelerating, kind of like a small exhaust leak (or sports exhaust :D ) but not overwhelming like when there is an outright hole in the muffler.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Exhaust fumes in the cabin doesn't sound safe, maybe look at the steering shaft boot near the pedals see if it's properly secured with a large circle spring to the floor

Gas engines have EGR systems. Maybe not yours but some do.

Exhaust leaks especially up front should be done by a professional.. If you break a bolt, you May need to remove the cylinder head. Take it to a professional.

OK fair enough, but the mkII V70 did not have egr on petrol engines to my knowledge. Also agree good idea to be careful with the header / manifold, but for now I'm just looking for advise wrt. what the issue, ight be. I have bad experience (costly) with asking workshops to diagnose for faults. If I could find outwhat it is then I can evaluate whether to fix it myself or send it to shop. So any help would be deeply appreciated.
