1996 850GLT Replacing Rear O2 Sensor

I'm in the middle of replacing my rear O2 sensor. Car is up on stands all ready to go.

When I went to disconnect the electrical connector, I found that it had an extension. The wire on the new sensor is long enough to reach without the extension.

What's the reason for the extension? The wires on it are frayed, probably what's caused the code in the first place.

Is there any reason I can't just connect up without the extension.

The extensions are a genuine Volvo part and are prescribed for replacements, the outside air signal that the sensor uses comes in through the wiring sheath. The extensions basically allow for there to still be wire that is not all covered with oil, e.g. when there is a leaky turbo. They are not required, in your case I would bypass one that is frayed.

Only in 1997 the GLT got the LPT, it was the first year for the low pressure turbo.

It's a 96 GLT.
