1999 Volvo S70 ac fan problem

Post by asummers »

The ac/heat fan on my S70 has started an interesting symptom. When I start the car and turn the fan on, it doesn't want to run. Then when I start driving and accelerate the fan will start blowing. If I come to a stop while driving the fan will stop. And, sometimes when it is started it will work all the time...just not great. Baffled.

Neither strange or weird. The fan bearings are failing, and so bind up. When you move the weight of the fan blades un-binds the motor and it will run until you brake again. Once they have got to this stage, replacing is the only way to go. You can try removing the unit and lubing the bearings in the short term. If you don't mind leaving the glove box and passenger side under-tray off while waiting for a replacement, this may keep the fan running better until the new one appears.

As to OE v's aftermarket, I always go with OE, but I have seen TYC brand out there for a more reasonable price and will probably be fine or BEHR brand.

Just be careful re-installing and don't force the unit back in as it can be fiddly.

The problem I had with my 1999 V70 was the terminals to the motor would intermittently connect and by touching them and applying pressure it would begin to work. If you reach under the dash to where the terminals are located and apply pressure to them the fan should begin to speed up.

There is no documented fix for this other than fan replacement.

Exactly how mine failed. two screws to remove the glovebox and passenger side bolster, then four screws to remove the fan coming straight back per the thread. You can take to opportunity to clean out junk from your climate unit as well as inspect your EVAP core for leaks - look for oil stains on the core.

My '99 with only 173,000 miles on it quit working the way yours sounds like. Took the one from my '98 with 331,000 miles on it and it works great. Go figure.
I will tear the other one down some day and see if I can figure the problem. Until then, I have a good fan running.

Had a very similar issue. New fan motor fixed it. I put a cheap one from ebay in it. 15 minute total time to replace. If this one goes in a few months I will slap another el cheapo in it. I preach OEM, but this time that did not seem logical as OEMs are very pricey.

I have a collection of OE fans from PnP. Seems silly to not pull them when it takes so little effort. I have stopped doing that now as I must have at least 6 spares, and my car has already had a new one last year! Just hate to see good parts getting crushed.
