Re: V70R turbo heat shield same as V70XC?
Thanks, may do that. Or, I could just poke a hole in an XC shield
. Right now, I am dealing with a potentially much more serious issue in this car, so I will keep it in mind but have to find out if this car is worth spending any more $$ on.
Really, thanks for following up.

I told my source that the price seems high even though they are obsolete. They say the problem is labour to pull and many have failed as they thin steel rots around the mounting point on the turbo stud so many are scrap. I'm still contemplating, if for no other reason than as a template. The problem with the V70Xc one is that like you say you may have to drill a hole to mount it, but at least it is made of a heavier material.

I have to put my hand up here! It appears I may be wrong and the heat shield is NOT obsolete after all. I picked up the wrong information on the part # and following several e-mails with Volvo Sweden, it looks like the part I thought was the rear part of the heat shield is actually the heat-shield on top of the catalytic converter. Strange thing is Volvo says the part was never available to buy separately but there is a part number for it?!
A chance conversation with a former parts department colleague last week on the phone, he suggested I should drop by next time I was in the area to look at their system with the 'new' Vida. I was in on Friday, and the part 'picture; lists 2 different heat-shields, one of which IS obsolete. The part for my 2000 V70R would appear to be available, so they have ordered one for me to check out.
I looked up the part number when I got back and found it also fits some P2 models. By chance there was a 01 P2 V70 turbo at PnP, so today I took a chance and went down and pulled the heat shield, even though it did not look like what I expected it to be.
Turns out (with the use of a flash-light/torch (UK speak) and a bendy mirror, I discovered a bolt hole on the outlet flange from the turbo. Only thought to check there as naturally there was one on the 01 turbo P2. Sure enough there it was hidden from view. So all 3 bolt holes matched up to the 3 holes in the heat-shield. Both parts of the heat shield from PnP? $10 CDN (about $7 US). Part price from the local dealer (with tax) about $95 CDN ($70 US). Tasca has the part for $45 US, but with conversion rate and shipping it would cost me the same. Also, if the part tuned out to be wrong, the cost of returning it would be high. At least the dealer will take it back if it is wrong or I change my mind.
So then the question is, what the heck is the lonely stud on the top of the turbo for? Ideas?
If the part # is correct then the part # is 30713259. However, based on a part # search on Vida for this number it says it was fitted to most P80 and P2 turbo cars which I know is wrong as I pulled one from P80 and it didn't fit my car.
Once the dealer part comes in I will conform what is correct, but won't make any predictions as to what it fits as Vida doesn't make sense.

I have the same stud on my 1999 ME7 HPT
As far as I know it never had a cover. We've owned the car since 2000

Well that is a strange thing. At least I feel somewhat better now that I know that I am not the only one that has this strange pointless stud on the turbo. That was the reason I was so confused as to what the heat shield should look like as there is a dearth of pictures on the web of this area.

Well I am amazed that Volvo has a stud and don't have 3 things attached to it to make working on something impossible. I bet an engineer got sacked for that!

Neil I feel your pain but I also keep smiling, I recall that I had exactly the opposite reaction when I began wrenching on 850s!
For several years I only had an NA 850 and I marveled that compared to all the previous cars I had worked on over 25 years (all Japanese, except for that starter car 69 Mustang I had for too few years ...), with the Volvo you could basically get out a lawn chair, set it up in the engine bay and go to work on whatever you wanted, no problem. After all those Mazdas and Toyotas and Nissans, I loved the way the P80 is so logically laid out, with so much room to reach things, and so easy to work on!
It's the combo of AWD and turbo, heck a big turbo in the case of your '00 R, it makes for some nasty tight fits. Add in salt and winters for good times.
