855R intro and rear seat squeak fix

Post by kauboi »

Hello all, I'm new here and a new 850R owner, my first Volvo. Bought the car running, and have so far done;
replace rear tailgate/glass
timing belt
spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor
pcv system
vacuum hoses
brakes
trans flush
end links
shocks and struts
heres a pic;

Enjoying the car, but the rattles and squeaks drive me nuts, so have been chasing them down, and had the rear seats squeaking, so found a thread suggesting electrical tape to fix, but didn't work for me on drivers side, since the rubber inside the catch was too far gone. I ended up buying a replacement latch for the passenger side cheap, and upon installing it, realized the worn part can be replaced without taking it apart. When I took the old "v-block" out, I saw that it only wears on one edge, and the other edge was like new, this gave me the idea to remove the disintegrated drivers side one and reuse the pass. side one in it, but turned around. Here's a pic showing the original in my hand, and the pass side v block in the driver side catch;

If yours squeaks, you might be able to just rotate the blocks to their unworn side

Welcome to the site! Thanks for the tip and great photos... I didn't know about this source of squeaks and I'll have to go and check out mine to see if it's worn too.

Welcome to the site and thanks for the idea to yet do more work on an aging car. :lol:
That squeak has been bugging me for a while and never have time to look into it.. Looks like you have narrowed it down and should speed up the fixing process.

I had a new 1998 V70 that had a small "chirp" sound coming from the rear seat latch. The dealer did a "great warranty job" and wrapped electrical tape on the black catch that this latch spans onto. When the sound starts to come back you simply wrap new electrical tape and the chirp goes away. I've used this on used 850/V70 wagons and it does the job even outside of warranty.
