Rear brake squeal / squeak

Post by mtd240 »

2007 XC70, 113,000 miles

Replaced recently (4k miles ago) with Zimmerman rotors and Akebono pads. Noise has pretty much been there since ~100 miles after I did the work. I've pulled the wheels off and re-lubed everything (every point that the pad comes in contact with the caliper) twice. Still squeaks!

Is this similar to the well-known issue with the previous generation (850 and V/X/XC70s), where the front edge of the pad makes contact first and causes the squeak (repairable with some shims)?

Just don't want to go and replace them again. Also don't want to wait 20k miles with the squeak

Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Heckling is fun too

Similar issue, I can tell you my experience with REAR brake...

* 1998 S70 GLT: Mintex was quiet until about 2-3mm, then it squealed like a school bus. Believe me, I have been around Volvo 25 years, so I know how to apply anti-squeal compound etc.
- Tried Autozone Duralast MKD31, the cheapest pads (they carry 3 types but only had the cheapest in stock), it squealed even louder!
- I listened to forum and bought Akebono EUR541, it squeals only in reverse. Forward: it squeals a tiny bit just before stopping; something I can live with.

* 2005 XC90 2.5T: Stock Volvo pads were noisy just before full stop.
- ATE rotors + Jurid pads: slight noise for 2 months, then once the pads settle down, it is all quiet now.

Sorry, I can't help you with your 2007 XC70, but try Jurid...

PS: I also have 2 BMWs and they are quiet, zero squeal! Volvo REAR brake...my theory is they do not have enough hydraulic pressure (? caused by Volvo proportioning valve) to clamp down ---> squealing noise. Just a theory.

I have front Akebono pads and don't know the rotor brand. At some point they started to squeak, I switched the rotors between them and it was quiet since. I'd also make sure there is no air both inside the caliper but also inside the ABS valve body - air gets trapped and needs be removed with a pressure bleeder.
