2004 v70 hard rust brake disc edge

Post by qwertyjjj »

The garage has suggested taking the rear discs off for a maintenance.
They have a hard rust on them, the pads only seem to be cleaning further in.
We get harsh winters here, which probably contributes.

Is this normal and is a maintenance necessary?

Do you mean there is a build up of rust on the outer edge of the disc itself?
What sort of cost are they quoting to "clean" them.

That seems weird, however we don't have harsh winters or salt on our roads.
If the rust was extremely bad and built up to the point of throwing the disc out of balance then i suppose it's possible, but that rationale doesn't seem to make much sense.
If that WAS the case, then just remove your wheel and scrape it off.

Is it the discs or the calipers that are rusting?
Take a photo and post it.

A photo would help

I too have layers of rust detaching from rear brake disks. Particularly on the outer edge. It doesn't matter, but I did tap with a hammer to detach the rust. More a matter of aesthetics I think.

Good idea to remove the disks. The issue is rust building up where the handbrake pads slide on the disk. These pads are inside the disk - are not seen when the disk is installed. Rust building up inside cause the handbrake pads to stuck, de-laminate, and ruin the whole handbrake assembly. Good idea to clean this friction surface inside the disk. Also, pull the handbrake every day while rolling at slow speeds, to keep this surface clean of rust, especially in winter or after a rainy day.

Removing the rear disks is difficult because rust builds up and the inner lip gets thicker and won't slide past the handbrake shoe. Handbrake shoe springs may break in the process of removing the disk. Ask the garage to sand the rust off the inner lip so next time the disk will came off easily.

Installing these helps improve the handbrake force, which is rather weak on this car

Looks like this.
Brakes squeak occasionally when stopping but not much.

No worries about it, only aesthetical. The center portion has no rust, seems like a quality brake disk
