2004 Volvo V70 Coil Spring Rust question...

- Car is a 2004 V70 2.5T FWD with 103K miles in the midwest, snow salt, P.O. did not seem to wash the salt off in the springs...

- I was doing some brake work and noticed the coil springs (front and rear) have some rust. Car runs fine, zero issues.

- I forgot to take some actual photos, but found some similar photos on the web, so I will post these random photos here for discussion.

- In your experience, is there any significance of the coating peeling off with rust? Can the coil spring break because of the coating peeling off with rust?

Long term, yeah sure there's a point when there's a problem.

Short term, well. All my cars have looked like that. It's a question of how long you're going to keep the car. There's a lot of preventive maintenance that can be done if you want to. I myself wouldn't call this urgent as long as it isn't deep.

Probably a MTTF from rust of 20 years, or 14 Canadian years

I had one rear spring break when the C70 was only a few years old and no visible rust. Then years later the other one went when it did have some rust on it. The front ones are fine despite having some of this rust. I think that this type/level of rust has no effect, it's mostly cosmetic, seems it's mostly the powdercoating flaking off.

From what's been talked on forums, it's rare to see a broken spring on a S60 or V70, and 100K is low miles for these items. The XC70 however, with longer coils, was plagued with this issue mainly due to a design defect.

I'm in Canada and my springs are/were more rusted that the left one in the lower picture. I too some anti rust spray paint and coated them carefully (no real need to remove them), bot the front and the rear ones. Some truck bed coating spray or alike may work even better.

Whatever your choice, I'd say don't throw them away as yet if you decide to replace them. Replacing the springs often times give a weird ride unless you go with the main dealer and even then.
