99 T5 Cooling Fan runs when car isn't up to temp yet

Post by Auburn T5 »

Ok so I'm scratching my head on this one now.

I've replaced the vast majority of everything in my coolant system at this point due to some split hoses, leaky radiator, etc.

Here's everything that is new

All coolant hoses (even the small ones around the turbo)
Radiator
Coolant temp sensor
Thermostat
Coolant reservoir and level sensor
Cooling fan assembly
Heater core
Coolant lines running to firewall/heater core

The cooling fan assembly is the only part that is not OEM Genuine Volvo

The only code I currently have is an evap leak which I presume is being caused by a split vacuum hose back at the charcoal canister.

But yeah... in the mornings, I can have the car just backing out of the garage right after cold starting and the radiator fan will kick on and start running.

It also runs for a while when I get home from work but I assume that's normal if the car was driven hard or up hills.

Can you datalog actual coolant temp and cross-check output from ECT sensor? I don't know... does the temp go through ECU to turn on fan, or is it ECT to fan? If the latter, I would question the range on the fan.

There ya go. A/C kicks the fan on regardless of engine temp. So you car is behaving as expected.

Question re Aux Fan running when AC is on...

In my 1998 BMW 528i, when AC is on, the Aux fan runs. But once the speed is above ? 20-25 mph, the Aux Fan turns off as there is no need for it to run at that speed.

In the Volvo 850, S70/V70, does anyone know if the Aux Fan turns off while the car is in motion?
