Volvo s40 overheating

Post by Eggyincali »

Hi, I am an Air Force wife whose husband is overseas and I am having a problem w/my car overheating. My dad is a retired mechanic and has suggested the thermostat needs changing. If anyone has an idea how I would go about doing this I would be so greatful!! :) Thanks for any advise!

How to do it depends on the year of the car and the engine fitted. Let us know that and we can then tell you.

One more thing....when I am driving and the car starts to get hot (in the red), the Temperature will drop when the engine fan kicks off. It will shoot back up into the red when the fan kicks back on. Is this normal? Thanks again for all the input. :D

Sometimes terminology gets mangled as it crosses the Atlantic, but I think that I have this right. When the fan starts to .... well fan.... the temperature goes up? If that is what you are saying this is definitely wrong. The fan should pull the temp down.

Replacing the thermostat on your car is fairly easy. The instructions are from Volvo's VADIS. I apologise for the blurring in some parts but the paper I used was not too good. The thermostat is under the bonny pink bit.
