2005 Volvo XC70 battery replacement
New to Volvo just wanted to see if there is any steps in hooking up a new battery I tryed once and the alarm just goes off. Help please. A step by step on getting the car going again would help a lot thanks Mike.

As above, so there is amperage in the cables when the battery is connected/disconnected. Sounds counter-intuitive but helps preserve some sensitive electrical components in this particular vehicle.
I usually also have the key in ignition when disconnecting the battery because sometimes the battery cable doesn't pop up all of a sudden and might touch back the battery.
Quickly, key in ignition turned to position II (headlights on), remove battery cover, disconnect both terminals at the trunk battery - I prefer tossing away each cable once disconnected so as not to accidentally touch the battery - switch the batteries, connect the black cable then red cable, then remove the key from ignition.

Thank you so much I do a lot of my own repairs on ford and gm vehicles. I just hope I did not mess any thing up hooking it up with the key in my pocket. It has been un hook all night so I will give it a go later when I get home.

Found this on the web for you. A XC90 is shown in the procedure, but the same applies to XC70 (P2).

What is posted above from owner's manual is the way Volvo techs and indy techs do it.
The precautionary way to attach ground after SRS repairs or other wiring or body repairs where there may be a risk from SRS component deployment is to turn ignition to position 2 and then attach ground cable to complete connection of battery. There are no SRS components to injure you near battery.
No cycling door key a bunch of times either. Lock and unlock with remote is the action to get the car out of reduced function transport mode.
On occasion the alarm siren will go off when a battery is re-connected. I never had this happen when the cars were new and I suspect it is due to failing battery inside the siren module.
