1999 V70 XC engine swap

Post by cohomology »

So I need to replace a bad engine in a 1999 V70 XC AWD Turbo (with VIN 56 at 6 and 7 digits). I had hard time locating an engine from the same model year, both at junkyards and online. Can anyone help me with what other model years have direct swap ins? My guess is all 1998~2000 turbo engines with the same VIN digits would work, both S70 and V70 engines, but will really appreciate it if some of the more experienced gurus can chime in. Thanks a lot!

That engine is a tough one to find an exact replacement for. The '98 block is a bit different since the accessory (alternator, power steering, air conditioner compressor) mounting is different and the '98 doesn't have CVVT. The '98 really won't work.

The '99 is of course an exact copy and a 2000 will fit and everything will bolt up the same. The 2000 engine is a bit different internally but the differences are in the lifters (solid vs hydraulic) and you will never know the difference. The later engines have CVVT on both the intake and exhaust but you can use them. Just ignore the fact that the intake cam has CVVT and don't hook anything to the CVVT control valve on the intake side.

I feel your pain, it took me over a year to find one for my first '99 XC. I was about to give up and part it when a low mileage engine popped up locally on Craigslist.

I have one in Missouri but it is still in the car and it would need to be pulled.

99 and 2000 are the exact same motor, all others have issues to transplant, some minor, 98s are major

You are da mannnnn!

I still have a few questions for you though: up to what year engines will work? What about turbo engines from S70?

And may I have that spare engine please? I will make reasonable offers knowing the engine will work since it is from a reputable volvo enthusiast!

Your engine should be a B5244T. Any 5244T from a '99 or '00 is a drop in perfect match. It doesn't matter if it comes out of an V70, S70, or an XC.

I really need to pull the engine and the transmission out of the parts car (they ran perfectly before the drunk killed it) but it is a time thing - I just don't have any and I don't see that I will have the time to do it for a matter of a couple of months.

B5244T3 are all over the place, but B5244T is very hard to spot. Can I just use a B5244T3?

I think you can use a 5244T3 with no problems but I would wait for Mike to chime in. You could also call Lucky at ARD and he could tell you for sure. When I swapped them I did a 5244T to 5244T straight up swap with an engine from a wrecked S70.

How do I get in touch with Mike and Lucky?

I have 0 psi in cylinder 3 but ~180 for the other 4 cylinders. Would it be a good idea to take the chance and rebuild the head?

if you can get a look at the exhaust valves on you dead cylinder (inspection camera or pull the head) then you should know whether that is the issue. Sounds probable with one cylinder totally dead, and it is not rare on these motors.

Keep in mind, the XC's need a bit of torque to get off the line, you may not be happy with a low compression B5234T3 motor in there
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)
