1998 S70 T5 PCV relief?

Post by mar601 »

I have pressure buildup (smoke out of oil filler) so taking it in right away.I'm guessing the answer is no but is there anything I can do temporarily to make life easier for the engine? Keep the oilstick out a few inches? Loosen the oil cap? -- thanks

I realize this is a repair (from what I've read), that you do not want to put off.

By lifting the dip stick a few inches will let your engine breath or vent the positive pressure in your crankcase.

All you need is dipstick up a bit past the O-ring seal, it can rest on the O-ring (but not pushed down).
Any pressure will lift it up b/c it is seated down.

Timing Belt job nothing to do with PCV job.

Best is to search forum and DIY.

Ok guys thanks !

I just made an appointment for Tuesday to do the PCV job. The guy at Volvo said also that sometimes the PCV problem can create turbo problems (leaks etc). ? ?

Some oil in the turbo is normal, but a clogged PCV can cause excess oil to be forced into the turbo and basically leak from/to several places. If you are paying Volvo to do this job be careful, it could get very expensive very fast. Fix the PCV then see what if any issues remain.

Yeah I have the quotes in front of me -- 1998 with only 150K so worth the money to rebuild this car. Hopefully fixing the PCV will clean up some of the turbo issues -- fingers crossed. -- thanks

I'm going to have them do it all -- the PCV and the leaks around the turbo area. Question --
How common is it for the turbo to be completely replaced ? (150k on car)
Rare? Common? -- thanks

and -- if I need one, is there a good online place for replacement turbochargers? -- fcp and the parts houses don't seem to deal in them much

Best thing to do is buy a known good used turbo, or to have yours rebuilt. That said, most people think the turbos in these cars to very stout. Last winter I "rebuilt" mine using a $200 CHRA (basically the turbo core) from Ebay. It has worked well for 9,000 miles. Your car (if stock) has a 16T turbo with a straight flange. Check Ebay and see what they cost. Replacing them is straight forward.
