Hey guys, the volvo took a crap on me yesterday leaving me stranded at piggly wiggly.
I turn the key to start it and all the lights come on but it wont even crank. There is no clicking sound so I don't think it's the starter. I'm guessing pnp switch, starter relay, or my ignition switch which was replaced about 6 months ago so I really hope that is not it.
How can I bypass the relay and get it to start? My car is currently sitting in the parking lot and I do not have the money to tow it back home.
Thanks-
98 s70 T5 No start

Key UP (Pos II = Ignition ON), can you hear the fuel pump? If yes - then use a jumper between the small terminal and the big (B+) terminal on the starter solenoid. This bypasses the circuit from ignition key contact and feeds the starter solenoid directly. She should crank, and hopefully start (if there are no immobilizer issues)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Thanks for the reply, very helpful information. I was under the impression that there is no immobilizer on the 98 s70. I will try firing her up that way... if not I'll have my friend tow it with his truck to my mechanic in town.
Recently had the tranny replaced and its been acting up for the last couple weeks, so I figure if this problem is related to that in away it should be covered under warranty.
My mechanic told me after the tranny was swapped and everything was put back together it did not start because the pnp switch was not aligned. So we will see!
I'll keep you posted.

Sorry, I was not sure about the immob present or not either.
If not - then your case is even better (you are down to one suspect only, the PNP switch that is)

Yeah the only reason I even suspected it was because the car didn't start after the tranny swap, and this happening shortly the tranny began acting up. I had the orange flashing arrow a few days ago and sure enough she refused to fire up shortly after that.
Do you know where the pnp switch is located on this model? The only thing I know about these is they can cause a whole lot of grief.
Thanks for your time-

It's on top of the transmission where the Control Cable from the shift lever connects:

This diagram shows the location even better:

Another thing to try is with the shifter in neutral, foot on the brake, key to start position, move the shifter to see if it will start. This would be a misalignment. Also, check for loose connection at starter on B+ cable.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Hey guys, got a call back from my mechanic yesterday and he said it was my starter solenoid that's bad. Does anyone know how much one of these cost? I did not find much on the web about these being sold separately and really hoping I don't have to buy a whole starter.
Thanks-

You could get one for $40-ish:

...and your teenaged car may be asking you to buy her a whole new (or rebuilt) starter very soon, too...
