01 V70 T4 fuel gauge out + position light + Catalytic Conver

Post by TexasKiwiGirl »

So not a handy kind of girl.. Today I had about 200 miles of gas left when I stopped to run errands. When I turned car back on and there was no reading on gas gauge. Last night I had a bulb out/position light error message show up that disappeared after 10 minutes. In addition my check engine light has been coming off and on for the last 2 weeks... I had the message read at a neighborhood car repair shop.. it read as a catalytic converter problem. When I took car back to Dealer they stated it was an old message.. Something to do with rear part of exhaust and not to worry.. And cleared the error message out, Only for it to return 2 days later. I have barely had this car for a month and feel WAY in over my head! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. I don't want to get ripped off.. And have no budget for anything less than urgent fixes right now. Much thanks in advance!

T4? It sounds like a cylinder is missing?

:-)

Welcome to MVS!

It's important to get the actual code when the check engine light comes on. They come in format P1234 or something like this. The codes don't tell you exactly what's wrong, but give you guidance as to what to look for. We have most everything covered/discussed here, so I think we can get you going. Look on your dealer paperwork to see if they wrote it down as they are supposed to.

You can get your codes read at Advance or Autozone, who then will try to sell you an oxygen sensor (exhaust part) usually.

You can get a cheap reader for about 20 bucks now. That's probably 1/5 the dealer charge.

Hmmm...no fuel gauge on a 2001. I'll defer to the experts here as the 2001 instruments get complicated.

Fill up your chariot and punch the trip odometer and fill every 300 miles. Does the miles to empty number still function? That might work for you, too.

(Smiley above is that I'm guessing you have a T5 model, not a T 4. We are not only good looking on MVS, we are clever too)

Embarrassed laugh.. Figures I would get the wrong model.. Love the humor though!

I have no trip reading.. I pushed all the buttons in that area to see if I could correct it.. To no avail.. Hence my addition of fuel late last night. I was terrified I was going to get stranded.

I'll go to AutoZone today to confirm all the codes since I am assuming I'll have more than one now. I'll update the thread as soon as I can.

BTW.. Thank you to the moderator for not laughing at me r

Nothing here is urgent. Fill your tank often since you have no way of reading the level. The response from the dealer sounds like a typical used car dealer blow off. You will at least need 2 new oxygen sensors first, The catalyst is harder to determine. You need a new gauge cluster. That will take care of your odometer and maybe your fuel gauge. If you bought the car as is, you will have to pay to fix these things, If you got a used car power train warranty(common) the dealer should fix the Check Engine Light.
