2000 S70 Oil on Spark Plugs

Post by Ellipsis »

I was recently changing my spark plugs and found oil on the plugs in cylinders 1 and 2. This was not leakage from the oil cap, as there was no oil to be found anywhere else under the plastic "Volvo" cover; only on the plug tips. These plugs, especially #2, were drenched. I know what this means (bad rings or walls), but I want to know if anyone has any approximation of how long the engine has left. I've been losing fuel economy quickly, down from 32 mpg hwy, to 28.5, even with a new air filter and plugs. It has 146700 miles on it, and I drive 100 hwy miles 4 days a week. Any ideas of how long I have left? Thanks.

I would do a compression test in order to get some weighable facts on the over health of the engine. With 146,700 K on the car I would consider it midlife. Your recent loss of MPG could be fuel suppliers switching to a winter blend fuel.

Yes, time for a compression test. You may have leaking valve guides. How much oil consumption do you have?

The loss in mpg may be attributed to an old O2 front sensor. How many miles are on it?

A compression test sounds like a good idea. I'll have to look at the Carfax to see when the O2 sensor was last replaced. I've only had the car for about 6 months, but it only has one previous owner, and great dealer maintenance records. My oil consumption doesn't seem too bad, but I'll have to keep an eye on it going forth to get the exact number of quarts per mileage.

It is a common mistake for people to think fuel on a plug is oil... My guess would be that you have fuel on the plugs. Maybe running rich.

Maybe. I'd like that if it were the case, but it looked and felt like oil, and the other three plugs had none of it on them.
