Re: Tire sizes

Post by obayha »

The 15 inch wore out on my '99 so I replaced them with the 16's from my '98, so I hope it will all work out. I understand 16 inch tires cost more, but at this time , they are free and I will worry about cost down the road, as I am keeping both sets.
I am riding so must higher now.

The 98 V70Xc we had had 280mm rotors as standard and 15" rims, but you can go larger. Remember the wider the foot print of the tire in snow spreads the load but does not grip as well or cut through the deeper snow. Hence my original reply saying the listed tire size was 195/65/15 for this car v's the 'summer' size of 205/65/15.

The difference in the rotor size is achieved by obviously the larger rotor and a different mounting bracket using the same caliper. Seem to recall you need a longer flexi-hose too.

Neil.
Is it the same caliper? I accidentally bought the 302mm rotor on my last 70 and the caliper seemed way too small. I don't doubt you at all, just interesting that I could have just switched brackets and kept the bigger brakes.

280 mm calipers will work on 302mm rotor. Although there are no new or refurbish 302mm brackets available anywhere.

I just wanted to add that you have to be careful, not all 16" rims will clear the 302mm rotors. I know for sure that the 16" Persus wheel for example does not fit (I tried it).

On another note, I now run 195/60/16 Pirelli snows on my XC and it turns out to be a great fit. The tire is theoretically 1.1% smaller than the 205/65/15, but that's no biggie.

I found some 205/65/15 winters on steel rims for $300. They are off an early 2000 Ford Taurus.
I attached (factory rims specs picture). It seems the centre bore will be loose. And the stud size????
Would this be a risk?

Looks like the other way around. If the Vehicle 2 is the Taurus, then the wheels won't fit as the hub center is too small. You would need the center bore to be machines out. Also the stud size is less of an issue as again it is smaller, but may cause some wheel wobble if not tightened carefully.

Oops, yes the bore might be too small.
Thanks

Not sure where you are in Canada, but there are usually loads of 15 and 16" winter tires and rims for Volvo on Kijiji this time of year. Here in Calgary there are a fair amount for sale.

Hi Neil, I am close enough to Calgary, I check kijiji everyday. Am I missing something? All the tires are too big or small. Or like the above post, the rims don't fit my model. I don't think I've ever seen a make of car with so many size variations.
