2000 volvo v70 N/A transmission slipping

Came home after dropping my daughter off at school (6 min ride). On the way back the brake light dummy light came on the dash. I've never seen it on before and was curios. As I was parking the car would rev in drive and the transmission would not engage. I drove down the street and it was shifting in and out of gear and slipping still. Then it stopped. The transmission has always not been too smooth (rough shifts, delay when shifting into drive etc..). Am I into transmission replacement territory on my 212K volvo v70?

Where do I check it? I still haven't located the dipstick.
