Here is the question I see that the manual says I can use 15W40 oil....now the question is...can I use 15W40 DIESEL MOTOR oil in a Volvo 5 cylinder GAS engine....? I would say YES in that diesel motor oils have more additives in it for soot and acids and so on making it a better oil for keeping things cleaner and so on....however I just wanted to ask if there is any problem or reason that is unknown to me why I can not or should not use diesel motor oil in it.
And I guess I will ask how many of you use diesel motor oil in your GAS engine Volvos....

You'll note on that chart there is a given ambient temperature range given as well. Seeing as you're somewhere in Canada, 15/40 is awful thick for cold climates. 10/30 is a safe bet, with 5/30 great if if gets REAL cold where you are.
15/40 can reduce fuel mileage, and cause the motor to turn over slow when cold

SYNTHETIC SAE 5W-40, or even Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic motor oil should work fine.__Lloyd__ wrote:...15W40 oil....
I'm using Castrol Edge 0W-40 (European formula) currently in my red-block 245 (1993)
Volvo says for your vehicle, "Synthetic oils complying with oil quality requirements are recommended for: Driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances or for prolonged driving in mountainous areas. "
Yes I do live in Canada, however just because I do does not mean we live in a -300c ice box....! Where I live winters are often around 0c ( 32f ) and a few times it got really cold and we hit -10c for a few days. If I go according to the Volvo oil chart, I can use 15W40 all year round in most cases. The weight is NOT the issues and not the question. The question is around more to do with using a DIESEL MOTOR OIL in a gas engine....the Volvo 850. That is the real question I am asking here. Is there some reason WHY I should NOT use a diesel motor oil in it....?
As for temperatures here, winters can hit -10c at time...rare but it does happen, on average winters here at in the 0c to -5c range and summers are 26c to as high as 38c. This past summer it was in very high 20c range and reached as high as 38c for near 2 months without let up....for us that killer heat. The very worst I have been in here has been +42c and I thought I was going to die. And I was not in a car but on my motor cycle doing a touring trip to Alaska back in 2012 and on he way up I had a area that was killer hot and the bikes temp was showing a air temp of 41c. I ride a GL1800 Gold Wing and shows air temp. That was the second time in my life that I jumped into a cold mountain river still wearing all my riding gear just to cool off. Then back on the bike and carry on only to be bone dry in under a hour and baking again. You know its hot when you stop and the asphalt road is so soft that your kick stand sinks in and the bike falls over.....now that's HOT...! My poor igloo melted that summer...and was left homeless....LOL. That's a joke by the way...we do not live in igloos here....OK.
Diesel motor oils have higher cleaning agents and so on then a gas engine motor oil....I just want to know is there is any down side to using a diesel motor oil in it.

Most "diesel" oil is certified for gasoline engine as well. Check the SM/SN label on the back of the bottle.
