I purchased a mint condition 2004 S60 2.4L with only 56,000 miles and had the unfortunate experience of rod failure (didn't tear down but tons of shavings in oil, and the knock is definitely rod knock).
I'm looking for a replacement engine but I can't find a decent lower mileage VIN 64 (CA emmissions / pzev) long block -- only VIN 61 motors.
I would GREATLY appreciate if anyone could let me know, with confidence, if a VIN 61 long block can be put in a VIN 64 vehicle (swapping all manifolds, EGR valves, etc) or if they simply are too different and I absolutely must find a VIN 64 long block.
Sincere thanks in advance for any insight or suggestions that may help me find the best (cost effective) way to swap in a new long block --- the VIN 64 motor seems to be somewhat of a 'unicorn' and if I can utilize a VIN 61 long block it would make things a lot easier - I just don't want to purchase, perform the labor, only to find out they're simply not compatible.
Thanks!

The differences will mainly be with the hang-on stuff to meet California emission regulations such as EGR and extra controls mostly vacuum connected. The engine type will either be a B5244S or a B5254T type, the former being the non turbo type.
As long as you find a compatible type of motor with the same designation as above the fitment should be pretty straightforward.

Welcome to the world of regulation.
I believe the fitment is actually identical and the 64 VIN is dictated by the registration point. Several states had PZEV requirements in 2005.
You get great benefits, such as 150000 mile /15 year timing belt interval, until you figure out that the hardware in the car is identical to the 100,005/10 year 61 VIN
On edit....bad info..see differences below

I think that difference is the fuel pressure sensor for ECM/PEM regulated fuel pump vs. full speed pump with fuel pressure regulator controlling fuel pressure. Your engine is the non turbo and there were Duall CVVT and single CVVT versions that year. B5244S is the single CVVT w/o fuel pressure sensor code 61 and the code 64 is the dual CVVT w/fuel pressure sensor. I'm not aware of any differences other than the head and the fuel pressure sensor.
So with the cvvt difference it sounds like I probably can't use 61 long block and would have to swap the head from my 64 to a 61 short block?
Thanks for the get info everyone - I really appreciate it!

just to confirm - based on jimmy57's description of differences is it possible to use the vin 61 SHORT block if I swap over my vin 64 head - or am i stuck, and definitely require a vin 64 motor ONLY.
thanks!
thanks!

So were you able to swap your 64 head to the 61 engine?
I didn't want to take the risk of buying a Vin 61 to find out if it would work. Mint condition 04 s60 with 56k miles (sans blown engine) still sitting in garage.
Have been extremely busy this year and put things on hold.. just re-started search for lower mileage vin 64 engine again.
As the value of the vehicle is dropping I'm more tempted to sell as a "mechanics special" since low mileage 64 engines are unicorns. Other opton is just rebuild but that opens a whole nother can of worms and I doubt would be more cost effective than engine swap.
Sigh...lol.

my 04 has apparently a bad motor vin 64. did anyone ever come up with whether or not a vin 61 will work in its place? i dont need the California emissions and i believe the 61 has more hp. also they are much easier to find than the 64, i have found many of the 61's only few 64's and they are some pricey son of guns. if there is anything that would need swapped in order for the 61 to work in place of the 64 that info would be great.
car is at shop and i need to get motor soon to install so any info would be greatly appreciated
thnx

You would have to be able to produce a ECU to drive the different fuel regulation and cam adjustments outlined above...in short, a tall order.
