1998 S70 T-5 240k miles
Just bought some rebuilt front calipers for this car. It has the originals. I read somewhere about the caliper slider pins on the rebuilts not being as quality as the original Volvo pins (Volvo #30648017). I see one of these pins, Volvo OEM, costs around $25.00. That's pretty expensive, $50.00, for a set of pins should you want new Volvo OEM. So, what's the issue on these pins in the rebuilts? Aren't the pins in the rebuilt units up to par? I haven't returned the cores yet, so I'm wondering if I should keep my original pins.

I haven't had any problems with the pins on the rebuilt calipers, at least the ones I bought from NAPA. They are easy to swap though so if you are more comfortable with the OEMs then go ahead and swap them. I always clean them thoroughly with lacquer thinner or mineral spirits, whatever I have handy, and lube them with Sil Glyde brake grease.

I think I'll keep my originals, clean and lube them like you suggest. I wonder why these are so expensive though. They're about half of the cost of the rebuilt caliper, which I bought from Napa as well.

I don't know that they actually change the pins on the rebuilt calipers unless they are damaged. The last set I bought from NAPA was the rears and the core charge was actually more than the price of the caliper itself - they really wanted them back.

The pins that came with the front rebuilts look new. I compared the weight of the original pin with a new from the rebuilt unit and couldn't tell them apart. I didn't use a scale, just held them in my hands. I don't remember where I read about the pins on the rebuilts being an issue, but I remember there was something about a lesser quality of the pins. Maybe I'm just being too picky.

Been there done that...
The rebuilt pins are Chinese stuff.
I took the pins out of the OEM stock caliper before turning it in for core.

When I got my rebuilt units, there was no requirement to return the pins so I kept the old ones. The 'new' ones that came with the re-builds where not of the same quality or weight. The surface finish was not comparable either, so I re-used the originals. The price of new OEM are ridiculous for a cylinder with a thread at one end and a 6mm countersunk head at the other.

Actually, if you search google using bmw 34110 41349, you will see this ATE part used in many European vehicles.
It cross-references to FTE pins, which are $14.49 for a pair, or $7.25/each:
