2000 V70R Timing Belt Issues

Post by Bluevanacd2005 »

Today, I had originally been looking for an oil leak (turned out to be the rear cam seal). But when I removed the timing belt cover, what I saw was awful! I replaced the belt and all components it touches about 1 year and 25k miles ago. Brand was goodyear. It seems it has been riding hard to the front of the engine, and the only thing holding it on has been the crankshaft pulley. The belt is very frayed on the front edge. To the point of missing entire strings in some areas. It has a spring loaded tensioner, not oil pressure driven.

I searched through a lot of timing belt threads, some involving a wobble, but no clear answers on doing any type of adjustments to it. Goodyear doesn't seem to be an amazing brand for these.

So my question is this: how do I make sure this doesnt happen again? Different brand? What if I put a new belt on and it does the same thing? How would I adjust it to make it track straighter?

Remove that piece of sh*t untill it's too late and install a Conti,Power Grip or Oem Volvo timing belt.
I wouldn't even start a car untill that crap is been replaced.

Before installing a new belt, check all of timing belt components. What brand are they?

If you could also snap a clear picture of the top of the tensioner that might provide some helpful information. I can't tell where the tensioner indicator is with respect to its "window".

Is the timing belt cover worn along the track of the belt?

It's about 55 F here... I'm guessing the belt is more like 70 F though because the engine is still a little warm from moving the car from the driveway to the backyard. Either way it isn't too far off...

So Goodyear is a junk brand for these belts?

How is dayco?

Edit: forgot to answer your question about the cover- no, it wasnt touched by the belt.

Thanks for the help!

Stay away from aftermarket stuff if you want to keep your engine.
Your mechanical tensioner is on the way out (see the photo of your TB leaning outward a bit). When the mechanical tensioner fails, it is no longer straight, it has some play allowing the TB to lean outward.

Get the TB kit from dealer for $120. This kit includes Volvo OEM TB (made by Conti), INA mechanical tensioner, idle pulley.
Or you can buy a Conti kit for about $110 or so. Basically same stuff as Volvo OEM.

PS: If more than 200K, consider new Aisin WP too.

I would check all places because to me the belt is rubbing on the outer edge. Maybe check see if the belt touches when it passes by the crank pulley. Seems the replacement timing belt kit was of cheap quality. There are more than a few horror stories with cheap timing belt kits on Volvo forums.

Didn't even know Goodyear makes belts for Volvo. I have Dayco kit and it's so-so; I would never put it on a R.

It looks to me like your timing belt is rubbing on something, and the idler/tensioner is the culprit.

I assume the engine is still running, so I'd suggest starting it and do a close inspection to see where the belt is rubbing.

More importantly, replace both the belt and tensioner.

With the engine running, it hangs off the idler the most by about 1/4" or a little more. The next pulley it hangs off a lot is the tensioner by almost as much. It's obvious the only thing keeping it from walking all the way off is the crank pulley shoulder. I believe this is what it has been rubbing on. I put this belt on just over a year ago, and replaced all components, including the water pump.

I think going forward, I will get a Conti belt kit, and replace everything again myself. The car has 199,996 miles on it BTW.

Thank you for the help! Very quick replies, especially considering it's Christmas lol :P

I'd ground the car ASAP. Once the tensioner goes, you are in for a lot of fun!!!
If this were my car, I 'd do:
- TB Kit.
- Aisin WP too.
- Also, at this mileage ~200K, the coolant reservoir can go any time, check it, if it looks bad, replace it.
- The turbo outlet hose behind the engine, take this opportunity to replace it too since you drain coolant for the WP job.
And check all coolant, heater hoses...

When replacing the WP, make sure you clean the old gasket really well. I posted info in the TB, serp belt DIY thread.
