I have been driving my 97 Volvo 960 for 5 months ever since my Chrysler minivan burned down in August. So I need help. I am an expert on Chryslers 1997-2006 but Volvo is a whole different story. So, ever since my friend had the car, it has been hesitating. Not always, but at a red light, if you go to accelerate, it's almost as if you're riding on square wheels for a second. It then just catches up and I am on my way. Plus, it smells like gas when I get down to below 1/4 of a tank. Also, recently my check engine light came on and I have an OBD II scanner through 2000, but no european cartridge. I used the generic reading and put in my vin and the engine spit out 12 codes. I got scared. From the codes I got, (Cylinder misfire 1 & 4 and random misfire as well as egr system flow and some weird ones like P3;00 and, p000 4?01 also small evap leak (that was my gas cap. oops) and an exhaust recirculation) I deduced that this may be the egr valve and that would be why I was getting 12.5mpg on a car that should get 18-23mpg. But what flustered me was that, I pulled into a spot at the doctors, and when i moved into park, the engine started racing. After I turned it off and went inside, I come to start the car and all it does is crank, no clicking, just almost turning over, like it wants to but something is just holding it back. I called my husband and he came to get me. Can anyone help me? Should I not have waited to fix this? I am just scared I damaged the whole exhaust system. Thank You!!!

Ok, so no start feature was fixed after replacing the ECT and it runs nicely now. I also have a problem where, after the car thought is was overheating, the internal cooling fan turned on. Okay, no prob, I'll just wait until it stops to due the diagnostic. However, when it stopped, I turned on the battery and it turned on again. I took the little clip thing out of the socket to disconnect it while I worked and plugged it back in and it kept coming back on. I think this was solved by replacing the ECT but I don't know. I have to wait to see if the temp gage shoots up again. Does anybody know if EGR valve failure can cause a malfunction in the ECT? I think it makes sense due to the lack of optimal combustion temperature. Thanks again!
