I think I see the problem in the warranty. Bonita Springs Volvo warranted the part, not Volvo. Thus, it doesn't travel to the new Volvo dealership. Of course, Bonita Spprings won't give you a new ETM unless they diagnose it either, which is fair.

The PO didn't do you any favors with that sharpie warranty note, that won't go far.

I think your best bet is to self diagnose and then replace it yourself.

I bought one of these ETM from our website supplier. Now it's just about the diagnostics and charging me for it. I talked to a few volvo owners in the area and almost all of them felt ripped off by Wallace Volvo in Stuart FL. I told them the best way to help Karma out in this case , is to write a review for them. I saw a couple have trickled in already :)

Without seeing their diagnosis or getting the car scanned independantly how do you know the level of deception they were really perpetrating? Perhaps the ETM isn't faulty at all :)

I did an online search and found that the Throttle body is likely the culprit. When I purchased the car the seller gave me a receipt with a replacement throttle replaced under warranty by Bonita Springs Volvo. with 2 year warranty on the part. The part was replaced last year.
I called bonita springs Volvo and they confirmed that the Warranty stays with the VIN number, so there wouldn't be any issue.
Had the car to a Volvo dealership near me towed to replace the part. I instantly said it is the throttle body. , But they insisted the need to do diagnostics on the part, and if there is a warranty I don't have to pay for diagnostics. Yesterday they called and said that the throttle body needs to be replaced plus the O2 sensor. (which I think is total BS , there was no check engine light)
I told them hat I learned from Bonita Springs and that their service manager advised me. After hanging up on me several times and me finding out that the 'service manager for volvo', I talked to is in fact a MAZDA service manager (according to the phone dispatch). they said I need to pick up the car and pay for the diagnostics, their Rep said there is no warranty on the part. WTF...

Here's my summary. Read with an open mind...

You bought a used car. Previous owner had the car serviced at dealership #1. I see a 1 year warranty, with a sharpie pointing to the software reload and a claim of 2 years warranty.

You have car issues, and read on the internet that it COULD be an ETM issue.

You go to Volvo dealership #2, and demand they replace and reload the ETM because you read on the internet that's what is wrong. Sadly, you are totally in the wrong making these demands. Any and every tech will diagnose the car first before swapping any parts.

It looks to me as if you're on a mission to discredit dealership #2. If I were you, I would bring the car to dealership #1 who made the claim to warranty the parts & labor. Do not be surprised if you still need to pay for something though

You need to have a good relationship with a mechanic to BYOP. By analogy, it's like bring your food to a restaurant and asking them to cook, then complaining about the meal.

The margin for the dealer is higher on the diagnostics than the ETM, so the reluctance to do this isn't profit driven

actually your account is wrong in a few points

1 i bought the car as you described.

2. I went online and read about the ETK, I called the dealership #1, which fixed the part and asked about the warranty and they stated the warranty stays with the VIN# and I can take the car to a Volvo dealership near me to have the part replaced.

3. I went to Wallace Volvo in stuart FL (dealership #2) and presented them with the paperwork I had from dealership #1. Service Person DAWN didn't tell me that the part is NOT under warranty since the car has a different owner now (which SHE should have) but was deceiving me by making me believe, that they would fix the part under warranty and then call me the next day to say it's not covered under warranty first and then said that its not covered because the car was sold to a new owner.

4. they came up with a repair bill of $900 throttle body plus O2 sensor. I said there was no engine code before I dropped off the car, how come they have an O2 sensor replacement on there. They don't know!

5 they insisted on charging for diagnostics, even though I informed them about the problem and about me knowing what the issue is.
After al this they should have been waving the diagnostic fee, they didn't tell me anything I didn't know.

Paid diagnostic fee, and had AAA pick up the vehicle. got the invoice and a damage sheet (no diagnostic report) so I called them to find out why there was no report. According to their service advisor Dawn the report is on the invoice and that's all they have. So I hung up and called the service manager Larry (who didn't answer the phone) so I called 5 times , and then this Dawn called me and said she's having her Service Manager scan the Diagnostic report and email it to me. (so suddenly there was a diagnostic report and was not on the invoice but an entirely separate paper)

I talked the the AAA guy and even he knows a row of unhappy customers with this Volvo dealership and they always treat their paying customers like shit.
The dealership discredited themselves, by their ignorance. I don't appreciate being yelled at, cursed at and then hung up upon. They have been deceiving from the get go.
Had they told me 'Sir , I see the car part was installed under a different name and this Volvo dealership #1's warranty doesn't cover the parts and labor of a different dealership. It will cost you $129 in diagnostic fee plus the repair , if you decide on us fixing it'.
Then I could have made the decision on wether to proceed or have the car towed somewhere else. But they didn't do that When I showed them the paper work I had from the dealership the day I have brought the car for them to fix.
It's about being dishonest.

This is the "diagnostic Report' they sent me.
It looks to me like a list of parts and part numbers, not a diagnostic report with fault codes and such. Also on every diagnostic report I've seen so far , there was a name and Vin # and such on it.

But what do I know...
