Best spark Plug to use? Any ones to stay away from?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Best spark Plug to use? Any ones to stay away from?

Post by Bigbill55 »

I'm changing the plugs in the car, 02 S80 T6 turbo. I called the local parts store, and have a wide variety of choices, from double platinum to iridium. Which is the best one to choose, if I'm not going with a Volvo plug? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks,

Bill

Edit: Is there any brand or type to avoid? Thanks again!

I would get the Volvo plugs. I sorry I can't remember what the other plug I used one time but they were about $8.00 each and had double electrodes. Car just did'nt run smooth. With 6 of the 5 cylinders in the family we have always used the Volvo plug. If you just got this car make sure you check the tranny fluid flushing history.

Volvo OEM. I just pulled a set of iridium platinums that I put in a few months ago and replaced them with a fresh OEM set on my XC70. Instantly saw a improvement in fuel economy - and it feels like there is a performance improvement as well.

Thanks guys. Guess it's the OEM plugs for me. I just ordered the timing chain kit. I'm guessing it's the original belt. Here's a pic. I have been driving it, but won't any more until I change the belt, pump and pulleys.

Here's some pics of the belt. Would you drive it like this, or wait until it is changed. Thanks!

Silly question. The plugs I pulled say Volvo on them. 2 of them broke when I removed them. Where do I or what is a good OEM part number to look for? Thanks again!!

Yikes on that belt! I use Volvo plugs after having read a bunch of posts on alternatives. As long as they last, not worth the risk of getting sub-optimal ones IMO. If you order them from a specialist, like IPD, FCP or for that matter your friendly Dealer, they'll make sure you get the correct set (sorry, don't have a P.N. handy). Watch out watch out for the plastic nipple on the thermostat as you remove the plastic cover over the timing belt. They get briddle with age and before tou know it you're installing a new thermostat housing. Not all bad, as kits that IPD etc sell come with a thermostat, gaskets, and also a new temp sensor, which deoending on how long ago these parts were replaced, is not a bad thing. All for a bit over $100 as I recall, original Volvo.

Thanks! I'll pay attention when I remove the cover. I'm not going to drive it until I change the belt. It's -20 deg F here. I figure there will be flexibility in the belt at that temp. The belt kit should be here tomorrow! Wish me luck!!
