P0014 & P0015

Post by AU-S40 » Mon May 28, 2012 11:59 pm

My 2000 S40 was reporting P0014 (Timing Over-Advanced/System Performance), P0015 (Timing Over-Retarded), P0507 (Idle RPM higher than expected), and a P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire). These were all with a generic scanner. I have a DiCE ordered, but it has not come in yet. I took it to a local shop and they replaced the VVT-Solenoid. Everything was OK for about a day, and then P0014 and P0015 came back. Today the P0303 came back as well. Any ideas on what to check next? I have no symptoms other than very hard starting and sometimes rough idling for a few minutes after cranking, both of which still occur after the solenoid replacement.

Those codes set because the cam timing was under and over target. CVVT solenoid can cause this as can a sticking CVVT actuator/gear hub assy.
IS the engine clean inside as far as you can tell?
SInce solenoid was replaced the hub is the likely item causing troubles.

AFAIK the engine is clean. I have not done that much under the hood, only on the interior. I will have him look at the hub. I did recently have a problem with the car leaking oil and if I remember correctly it was near the CVVT. I know the mechanic had to borrow a special tool to fix the timing. The check engine light came on shortly after that. Is there a chance that the timing may be off? He does not see a lot of Volvos. Would there be anything special about the timing that he might not have known?

If it helps any, I received my VIDA/DiCE package yesterday and the corresponding Volvo codes are ECM-60 and ECM-61. Are there any tests that I can run using VIDA? I also read about flushing the oil, a seal, or possibly the fuel pressure regulator? Would you recommend any of those? It has about 127,000 miles on it and I do not think we have ever used synthetic oil.

Sorry for the bump, but did you ever find a solution to your codes?
