Need help with smoke problem and tranny issue for '86 760

Post by Duder »

I have a '86 volvo 760 4cyl turbo w/ an automatic tranny w/ about 180000 mi. There's smoke coming back up through my dipstick and oil cap, and I read the earlier post about this problem. My rig doesn't have a flame trap, but I did replace the oil trap and o-ring connected to it in hopes that this was the problem but had no success. Suggestions?

Also my tranny all of a sudden won't shift into second gear, and I couldn't find any posts related to this problem. When I first got the car the overdrive wouldn't work, but I had that fixed with a device that bypassed the overdrive selenoid and had no problems after that. They also adjusted the timing of the gear shifting, and up until this point there was no problems. It was a tad bit ruff going into second but all the other gears were smooth, and I did have a one time incident were the overdrive refused to work while traveling for a long period, but when I gave the car a rest it was perfectly fine.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Have you checked that the hoses attached to the PCV system are not kinked or closing down due to deterioration of the rubber?

How long is it since the transmission fluid was changed? What colour is the fluid and does it smell burnt?

Bill.

I'm not sure were that hose is located, is it by the oil pan underneath the car? I ordered a PCV hose, but i guess I'm not sure were it's located, the book I have shoes the 230 engine but the model I have looks different than the pictures. The fluid looks good, still redish brown, but I'm going to try to change the filter and see because the tranny all of a sudden started shifting again with no problems, but I assume there's something still going on with it and a new filter couldn't hurt. There was no smoke smell to the fluid either.

There is a very good diagram of the PCV system for your car on the FCPGroton website:

Do not try to replace hose #7 as you need to remove the oil pan (sump) to replace that one.

Changing the transmission filter will certainly do no harm, but consider changing the fluid at the same time. For any oil, engine or transmission, I always think that changing one without the other is false economy.

I've checked out all the hoses except the internal one (#7) and they all look fine and one of them I had already replaced before this happened. The tranny is fine by the way, I believe the fluid change was the best for it and I put some lucas trans. lubricant so now all the gears are perfect. But this smoke issue has me stumped, I was thinking that i should follow breather hose that feeds over to the turbo area and make sure all those hoses are clean. Any further suggestions? Thanks.
