Thanks

I did two full ARX cycles in my daily driver, a 94 855T. I started the first cycle at 169k miles, the mileage the car had when I bought it. I picked it up to replace a 245 winter car. The 855 has 183k on it now and runs smooth and quiet. When I first got it it ran rough and had some lifter tick going on so after stage 0 and then some, I did the ARX.

I've noticed an improvement in gas mileage and smoothness at idle and throughout its rpms range. I never did a compression test so I can't attest to that one way or the other but the car idles steady at 19psi. I have a 97 854R w\ 69k miles on it that I can compare the idle to the wagon now and attribute that in part at least to the ARX. The very first oil filter I removed was just full of black mud and left me wondering how anything was getting through there. A year and a half later now I add 3 ounces of ARX at every oil change. I stayed with a dino oil, Castrol in my case because the RMS is dry and I just couldn't bring myself to switch over to M1 after the ARX treatments. I didn't want to push my luck.

If you try ARX, the simple instructions from the web site are key to getting it to work right, it would seem to me. I've considered doing the tranny but the po flushed it just before I bought it and I think I'll just change the fluid regularly now because its running good and hasn't acted up through two New England winters. That's my story

Just wondering if a few people who've been using it for the last 3 or 4 months could chime in with an update... how's this workin'?

I'm not sure.. The 'look' in the oil fill hole is about the same. The car never made a sudden change, so it's really hard to say if anything has happened. I'm on the 2nd phase, where I'm just running normal oil, sans A-RX and it's not turning black, like I've seen mentioned.

I changed out my ignition wires a couple weeks back and that made an obvious difference. Even so, my highway fuel economy is 24mpg (75mph average speed)...

I'd say that it's not hurting my car in any manner. I'm curious to see how much metal is stuck to the drainplug magnet when I change my oil this time.

My car still has random valve tick, even when I drive it every day. My 960 has valve tick only when I haven't driven it for a long time. I'm thinking of switching over to 10w30 synthetic oil after this flush phase.

Thanks for responding Luke. I have just ordered 2 bottles for my 93 with 344,000 km. I'm thinking based on everything that I read that it won't hurt anything. I found some interesting articles on a BMW site where the product did not seem to do anything in terms of visible changes to the valvetrain, as seen thru the oil filler hole. I'd like to think that while it may not do a lot for that varnish, it will instead work on any sludge that may be there. Do keep updates coming, as I think a number of people here would like to know.

... anyone else with an update?

Well, I don't know why the BMW owners look through their oil filter can to check for cleanliness. I've worked on the E36s and that is a horrible spot to evaluate, because its almost always clean, because nothing ever accumulates there.

Well as for the Volvo. I've noticed that the auto-rx has dislodged lots of crud and crap over the year i've been running the two auto-rx treatments. Just the other day, I found lots of crud collected on the valve cover right where the cap is. I never seen it there before, but I managed to insert a finger and literally get this crap out. Must've been something auto-rx dislodged and has not made it back to the filter yet.

Overall, the engine (gradually) is much smoother now, and has been performing better under loads. I remember driving it before the auto-rx treatment, with a full load of cargo and passengers and the engine would struggle to stay at 70mph. Now after the treatment, the engine is so smooth and has some power returned to it, it can pull easily 80+mph in the same situations. Gas mileage has improved slightly, but the performance for me has jumped (partially because of the airbox thermostat modification I did). Currently i'm very happy with what auto-rx has done for my engine. I even used it to do my power steering, and it made it even more quiet than what i thought was normal. Pretty soon i'm going to use it to clean out my transmission too, just for kicks.

Currently my car is at 178K miles, and believe me, it will reach 200K effortlessly... and probably well beyond that. Since this is my only car, I keep it maintained and in top condition as much as possible and i'm very pleased.

I'm having some goofy fuel delivery issue right now, perhaps due to bad gasoline I filled up with yesterday.

Since I pulled the plugs to check their condition (looking for a dead injector or something) I ran a hot engine compression test.

The numbers are 1:170psi, 2:165psi, 3:165psi, 4:165psi, 5:155psi

So cylinder 5 is still lagging behind. I never ran a hot compression test before, so my numbers may have not gone up all that much. Just posting, so I can compare in the long run.

Kelvin, about that "crap" you scooped out... would it be worthwhile to pull the valvecover and clean that out?... If it's solid enough to scoop out, I would think it's still solid enough to plug a passage somewhere. Good that it's loosening, but maybe bad how it's loosening??...

... anyone else with a thought on this?

The crap collected at a ledge near the filler cap. I only noticed it for the past three weeks. Its gone now, because i scooped it out. hmm... let me see if I can find that picture I took of this crap.

I'm not going to take apart the valve cover now, simply because i have no time to do so. But i'm sure Auto-RX has done its job of really cleaning out the motor. As for the crap collecting and clogging something, i'm not having any oil pressure issues or any engine problems whatsoever.

I do have to note I did a PCV replacement 6 months ago.

Pulling the valvecover on an 850 isn't exactly as no-brainer as doing so on a stovebolt Chevy 6. You don't just pull it off because of the way everything seals and is situated. It actually costs a lot of money in parts to pull it and replace it.
