I just heard back from VCNA. Denied any goodwill assistance after review by the local service manager and the territorial service manager.

I'd do some good old fashioned public shaming before hiring a lawyer.

Here, Facebook (post on VCNA's page), Twitter.

Use the representative's name, title and office he works from. Describe the problem accurately and the steps you've taken. As long as everything you write is true, you cannot be sued. It's part of our protections under the First Amendment.

Polite and truthful, but firm.

Oil level needs to be checked regularly on any car...

I agree except this engine has major issues. The higher the miles the worse it is. At 68k I found my car went through oil at a rate of over 4 quarts between fill ups. A quart a day and I didn't notice any smoke or oil leaks or burning. Strange. In 2 days I was 2 quarts low. I fill up every 5 days or so.

The service manager at your dealership is horrible. I know exactly who it is. You would have been better off going to Brown Daub Volvo in Nazareth but I still think VCNA would have denied Goodwill. Take it to the CEO. The AMM for Volvo is denying all kinds of Goodwill with this specific car and these issues.

People in The San Francisco Bay Area and Pittsburgh and Virginia appear to be getting their's Goodwilled.

74k miles and I am being told also that my engine is shot also. A 2012 Volvo S60 T5, worthless. Guess why Goodwill was denied? I got two answers. 1. Because it wasn't always serviced by Volvo, even though My wife stopped taking it there at 50k when she said they tried to rip her off. 2. Because the engine was oil starved. Well duh, but they can't tell me why it was starved for oil.

I tend to doubt a judge will make Volvo pay for such repair. It's sad, and we don't expect and engine to fail at 120k miles, but it happens. Hopefully it's not a design/manufacturing/assembly fault, because then there will be many other in such situation and we will found more about in a couple of years.
If it was related to maintenance or a faulty component - such as a faulty injector that caused a burned valve, little chances Volvo will pay, sued or not.

Making an assumption that the oil isn't checked regularly is just rude. Do you think I'd be shouting this from the rooftops if I weren't?

If you look on swedespeed or volvoforums you can find quite a few people having similar issue. Volvo says the rings are faulty but Goodwill is hit or miss. Very similar to the Audi and Toyota oil burning problems. Audi and Toyota extended the warranty on those engines to 10 years or 150,000 miles. Most 2012 S60 T5 will only be in the 36-48k mileage range. Many more will be popping up.

Many people are skeptical but I have seen enough people complain specifically about this year/make/model. You're not crazy and it's not just a coincidence. There is a defective batch of engines with this car. I'm seeing it pop up every day it seems. It appears Volvo just wants to quietly sweep this under the rug.

So probably they had the same oil breather issue (different than the old PCV system). It is very sad to see Volvo management still have the same denial approach as with the XC90 transmissions. It looks like a company culture here.
For having owned an Audi with this issue, and gathering information around the forums, Audi was absolutely helpful without any questioning to all customers - and there were a lot of them with the issue, going with replacing pistons and rings when needed at Audi full expense.
