I have an 06 V50, the wagon version of the S40. I imagine the tailgate latch bears some similarity to the one on your S40. There is a one piece plastic assembly that holds the two bulbs that illuminate the license plate (or tag, as they call it in GA), and a hand activated microswitch beneath a rubber membrane that causes the release of the tailgate latch. This assembly has a single electrical connector. If you are having trouble with both release and light bulbs, you might want to re-seat the connector to make sure it is making proper electrical contact.
Les is more.
