Fitting V70 AW55 50 into XC70 final drive Q

Post by Dog man »

Hi guys

New to the forum.

I won't go into the story but the transmission in my 2001 XC70 Turbo has finally given up at 150k and I have bought a low milage AW55 50 from a V70. (I have a new valve body, it only lasted a further 20,000 miles)

I have now removed the old gearbox and I'm looking at the differences in the final drives, namely the splined output to the angle gear.

Have removed the 'outer' sleeve that physically connects FD to AG, so now I'm left with the drive for that spline looking at me on the end of the FD. If that makes sense.

Do I have to swap FD's over or can the splined part be swapped across as it looks like it may somehow come off?

Thanks in advance!
Steve

You won't have AWD anymore.
You DO know this, right? Wrong transmission

Yes I know the question is essentially about making the donor gearbox into the AWD version

The only difference appears to be the final drives

Question was do the final drives just need to be swapped over?

What else is different?

I don't think you can make it AWD and at least you will need a new right axle.
Why wouldn't you just get the right transmission in the first place? This about the dumbest I've read in a long time

From what I'm told it's doable if the final drive ratio is shared. If the final drive ratio isn't shared you'll have CELs.

You need to split the casing to remove internals and swap them.

Well considering the boxes are the same JRL it's not dumb at all.

Just to be clear, I was fitting a V70 gearbox into my XC70.

The car is all back up and running and the AW55 50 from the V70 works perfectly and is now an AWD AW55 50.

For those that said it's the wrong box I'm afraid you're wrong. If you just meant the differential/final drive is different well thanks but I already explained that in my first post.

Just had to remove the bell housing and swap the differential over.

That also means swapping the crown wheel and final drive bearings. Perhaps the bearings weren't necessary but my ones have 144k on them and had slightly more play than the 70k donor, plus you only have to remove and press on one side as one half of the differential/bearing comes off with crown wheel.

Also the threads for the angle gear are there but needed final cut with 2&3 M10x1.5 taps.

This is really good to know. I noticed the threads for the angle gear there on a recent engine swap in my 2001 V70T5. I guess the opposite may occur if you wanted to make a FWD car into an AWD (though differences in drivesaft length may be the barrier to this)

A RHS V70R driveshaft would do the trick though.

You may have done a first here, congrats. I did not think this could be done!
However, what I said is true, They are different transmissions with different part numbers.
I still don't understand why you did it. There are infinitely more used AWD transmissions available than FWD

Mike - can you tell me approx how much the transmissions weigh, in kg??
