2002 V70 T5...Gonna be doing a valve job next week and needed the torque procedures/specs for the (12) head bolts.
Thanks in adance,

Replace the bolts with new ones, if you didn't already know. These are the stretch/tension type.

It's a 3-part process. First time through you torque them to 15 ft lbs, the second time through they're torqued to (I think) 45 ft lbs. Then the third time through they're turned 130 degrees.nthnnxn wrote:2002 V70 T5...Gonna be doing a valve job next week and needed the torque procedures/specs for the (12) head bolts.

I am not saying that it is not a great idea but Volvo does not consider white engine head bolts as one time use. When they listed anything in their publications for these engines it was a length and a note to replace if they exceed that length.
Torque plus angle is not always torque to yield fastener indication. The short in line 6 and the new 2.0 liter 4 cylinder use one time use TTY head bolts and they are smaller in diameter.
I have never seen a torque plus angle plus angle that was not a TTY bolt. Two torque steps when the torque is low as with the white engines is done to assure even compression of head gasket before the head bolt is loaded enough to begin to stretch. All fasteners taken beyond a certain load will yield and the angle is a way to get the same yield and thus the same clamp force for each bolt. Torque alone has too many variables for thread condition, cleanliness, and lubrication of the bolt. TTY fasteners are yielded past their elastic range and can't be re-used as the multiple angle steps will not produce the same result two times.

At 50000 miles after a head rebuild I had 4 bolts lossen enough to cause a head gasket leak , make sure your block has very clean or chased threads as in traceyssoaps tutorial but I would change the oil lube to red permatex. That is a tip from a 40 year veteran mechanic. It acts as a lube and will prevent bolts from coming loose but not work like thread tight. I had followed all the instructions and double checked my torque settings. We have a volvo xc 1999 v70 and I had the head redone professionally at a machine shop at 170000 due to a sticky hydraulic valve causing a burnt/blown hole in a Exhaust valve.
The symptoms were intermittent coolant loss and finally stumble starts then fine as it warmed up. Looking at the head gasket there are no compromises to see but we're it should be clean around the cylinders it has carbon deposits corresponding to the " loose" bolts. Hope this helps other Maintence OCD types like us who expect 400000 from their volvo.
