I had an interesting drive to work this morning. My driver's seat heater has had a hot spot on the left side bottom since I have owned it (8 months). It would usually cool off and feel normal after 10 minutes of operation but not today. I had it on low, but 5 minutes into my drive it got unbearably hot. At about the same time I noticed a strong burning smell. I turned it off quickly, didn't notice any visible smoke so I drove the rest of the way to work. When I got out, I noticed that the heater had unfortunately burnt a spot through the leather upholstery. Regardless of the small size of the burn, it felt pretty big while I was sitting on it! Fortunately, I had not turned the seat heat on while I left the car running unattended to warm up before my drive. If I had, I think it could have burnt the car down in my driveway.
If anyone else is noticing hot spots, I'd strongly recommend not using the seat heater until repaired. I'm going to unplug mine when I get a few minutes.

I had a similar issue with my '04 V70 front driver's seat. I contacted Volvo of North America and began an email correspondence with Donna. She informed me that she would contact my local Volvo dealership and alert them that I would be calling to schedule an inspection of the issue. They inspected the seat and found the issue with a faulty wire within the heating element. Volvo of North America repaired the heating element at NO CHARGE. I was without a vehicle for about 2 days but I could not be more pleased with Volvo's attention to a potential severe issue.

I contacted Volvo directly regarding this. They told me to schedule an appointment and have local stealership to assess the problem. Volvo would then consider covering the cost of the repair. Well, I already know what the problem is. Lets see, I could pay the dealer $100.00 and hope that Volvo will step up and cover the repair or I could replace the heater myself for about $65.00 and a few hours of work. I guess that my third option is that spring is almost here...
