My radiator failed and coolant got into the transmission for some amount of time. Prior to the radiator replacement it was mostly water in the coolant system. The weather was usually below freezing during this time. I did notice it getting noisier, but didn't put the two problems together until I replaced the radiator and started thinking about it.
I replaced the radiator/coolant last weekend and I flushed the transmission fluid (didn't look like fluid) out. Drained the pan first, and pumped out the rest. I used Valvoline max-life synthetic. Following the repair, I had a road trip to take and have driven the car about 700 miles. The car pulled and shifted great, no problem.
Transmission is still noisy (when in gear). The noise has diminished somewhat.
What exactly is making the noise (sounds like a power steering pump low on fluid), bearings?
Does anyone else have experience with this and am I facing imminent failure?
Has anybody ever successfully used an additive? If so, which one?
I'm thinking of buying a used tranny just in case.

It may be worth trying another flush on the trans. It could be there is still water in there. It may be worth trying it the way some of the guys here recommend and that is drain the trans oil pan and re-fill, run for a few weeks and do this again 3 or 4 times, checking on the color/condition/smell of the trans fluid as it comes out each time. This way there is a good chance you may get any lingering moisture out.
Unfortunately, you may have wrecked the trans with water being in there, but the flush may be worth it.
Firstly try the obvious and re-check the fluid level. I made that mistake of not re-checking it only to find it below MIN after a short gentle run. I was very lucky!

I did use a good fluid. And it is right at the full for hot after I've driven it for a while. It seems to have gotten quieter. I'll let it roll for a while and hope for the best. Really don't want to tackle a transmission replacement on the car right now. So many other things that need to be done... The suspension seems to be fading fast. Damn Michigan roads! Terrible!

I agree. A flush would at best buy you some more time to get a new transmission. A flush isn't a terribly expensive investment for the short term.
