I know that Volkswagens disable the AC at 4 oder 5 degrees Celsius to prevent failure from water in the system that could freeze. And VW makes the ice Symbol in the dashboard go on at that temperature as well.
So since Volvo turns on the ice warning led at 2 degrees it might be the same temperature the AC stops working.
should the A/C compressor be on all the time when set to min?

Does defrost mode override the temperature limit on AC? We haven't had enough freezing days this winter for me to remember..

Nope.
Heater fans are going on full speed,rec is on without light on by default...and everything seems like ac is on,BUT because of low outside temperature(below 2 degrees Celsius) compressor is not switching on.System is designed that way.
