Head Light Failure 1991, 240

Post by HawthorneTH »

I have a 1991 240 and I am using the Bentley Volvo 240 1983-1993 service manual and I can not find the relay for the head lights that they say is under the dash on the drivers side. I checked on the passenger side and behind the center console side panels. I am lost and until I fix this my daughter can not drive at night. If anyone knows where to look, please point me in the right direction. Thanks

I think I am looking at the same Bently manual. On the diagram on page 390-3 it does show it on the drivers side, but not exactly where.
Page 390-4 , Fig. 3 and 4 show pictures of headlight wiring. In Fig. 3 they show what might be the headlight relay. My guess from the picture is that this is under the hood and not under the dash. Just a guess.

I have looked under the hood, in the trunk, under the seats, you name it. I think I am going to use a fox and hound and see if that will help. I use this tool at work, but I have never tried it on a car.

Headlight failure on a 240 is usually at the step relay, under the hood, left side, towards the front, 2 little screws hold it to a metal bar.Sometimes the relay is ok, it's just a loose connection where the wires slid on.If you have a turbo it might be on the right side.If you still can't find it just follow the wires from the headlights.I guarantee you it is not in the trunk, it has to be close to the headlights.
