XC90 Jerking and the control panel(dashboard) goes off

Post by Say Dee Mac »

I own a second hand Volvo XC90, 2003 and it is an import from Japan. I am a Volvo fan but the car is giving me a heartache..well when its hot it would make a jerking movement while driving and it would sort of restart the battery while driving. The bonnet is usually very hot. it would show an engine light sign and it would just go blank and shut down everything...like the speedometer, doors lock(except the driver's), windows lock and the lights would be on,it would still drive but then its like its stuck at gear 4.Sometimes out of the blues it would not unlock the doors and the light inside the car would not turn off but some times everything is OK except for the jerking- that one is an every day thing and its wearing me down. Usually i would restart the battery and everything will be back to normal but only for a while. i have taken it to a Volvo dealer and they could not help me because the car is an import. To change the language as well they could not help me because they said it rejected the software. so sad...but i love this car very much and i cannot afford a brand new Volvo XC90. Somebody help me. when its cold it seem to be OK but when i drive long distances it would do the same jerking movement and shutting off...imagine driving to Kasane or Maun where there are lions on the way. Gosh!i will be dinner!

The fact Volvo can't help, might actually be a good thing. For this kind of trouble they usually replace random parts for a ton of money with no guaranteed results in the end.

The 2003 might have an issue with the DIM (the part where you have all lights, speedometer, fuel gauge and so on). But when this goes bad, it doesn't affect driving.

I'd have a look at this thread https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 57#p368657

The other thing to verify is the alternator charges fine and that the power cables around the alternator are not cracked.

What engine does it have and how many km on it?
