Re: 2000 V70R Power Steering Noise
Nope,,,just use the hose AS a stethoscope, it works great and costs a buck at your FLAPS or hardware store. Hold one end in you ear tight, use other end to listen to the symphony of your engine....the violins of the alternator....whir whir whir...the brass of the PS pump...oompa oompa......the percussion of the fuel injectors......click click click.....and the large hornet sounds when you hit the serpentine belt with the hose

I never had great success diagnosing noises in that area, but I think it was my inexperience. Even with the hose it seemed the noises bounced around and combined. I did not, however, have abscate's wonderful descriptions of the various parts. I might have to put a copy of it under the hood next to the vacuum hose diagram.

I have tried to record these on an iPhone but have never got that to work.
Right now, I have a CVVT hub on the 1999 making a whir that will need work eventually
You really can isolate noise to a component if you believe.....get the listening end up close and personal to the component - like touching it.
I think it might help if the hose is 1 meter long at least, not 3 feet, since these cars are metric,
If you use garden hose, it must colour match the car, because my court appointed psychiatrist makes me say that.

Got that video to run, Wow.
Thats loud. Pay attention to that one and if it starts to change tune, you will need to deal with it quickly
It sounds a lot like my CVVT whir, but much worse. If removing the serpentine belt cures it, it isnt CVVT of course.

from the 2000 MY V/S70manualEstVolvo wrote:"For fluid I have been using Valvoline atf, dextron III/IV"
Isn't there a different fluid that is supposed to be used on 2000 and up?
Oil quality
Meeting API specification SJ, SJ/CF, or SJ/Energy Conserving.
For best fuel economy and engine protection, consult your authorized Volvo retailer for recommended oils. Oil with a different quality rating may not provide adequate engine protection.
Synthetic oils complying with oil quality requirements are recommended for: driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances or for prolonged driving in mountainous areas.
Extra oil additives must not be used unless advised by an authorized Volvo retailer.
Viscosity (stable ambient temperatures):
Engine oil Quality: Meeting API specification SJ, SJ/CF, or SJ/Engergy Conserving Capacity (incl. filter): 6.1 US qts (5.8 liters).*
Automatic transmission fluid Quality: AW4: ATF Dexron III and Mercon.
AW5: Only Volvo gearbox oil (1161540-8). Do not mix with other oils. Capacity: 8 US qts. (7.6 liters)
Capacity: 8 US qts. (7.5 liters)
Manual transmission fluid Quality: Volvo synthetic gearbox oil 1161423 Capacity: 2.2 US qts. (2.1 liters)
Power steering fluid Quality: ATF Capacity: 0.95 US qts. (0.9 liters)
Brake fluid Quality: DOT 4+
Capacity: 0.64 US qts. (0.6 liters)
All specifications are subject to change without notice.
* Turbo-charged models: Add 0.95 qts. (0.9 liters) if the oil cooler has been drained

I had a couple of small leaks and switched to this: http://www.valvoline.com/our-products/a ... -stop-leak
It worked great. No more leaks. Just wonder how long it will last.
Was atf in it when you started? Is it possible that someone put in regular fluid and the two have now mixed? That might cause the problem if it ends up being the issue. I might also change the type of atf fluid and see what happens.
Maybe the iphone did not work because the cars are droid. I think that is in the manual somewhere also.
I think someone should do a diagram that has a picture of the component and then next to it a picture of the musical instrument it is supposed to sound like. It could be the 'abscate diagram'. How could anyone who developed such an important diagnostic tool be crazy?

Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

On the way home from work today, I picked up a stethoscope.
Once home, I checked for bubles in the power steering fluid reservoir (engine running) found none.
I then focused on using the stethoscope. The pump seemed noisy, but I didn't hear the whine sound. I touched the alternator, and it was much louder. So I proceeded to pull the belt off. Car was again much quieter with the belt off. Spinning the alternator over quickly by hand revealed a new sound that I didn't catch last time. It was a crunchy sort of sound. There was also a little bit of play in the bearings I noticed this time.
So after quickly calling around I found an autozone with the alternator in stock. Once I put the new one on, the sound was gone!
I have never heard an alternator sound like that! You learn something new everyday. I'm so happy the noise is gone!
Too bad about the time and money wasted on the power steering lol. At least I know it should be set for the life of the car now though.
Thanks for all the help, and prodding me to check other parts again!
