Lessons learned radiator replacement 2006 avoid mistakes.

Post by volvomadness »

First note the s70 and s60 are different animals when it comes to replacing radiators.

On the s60 the intercooler does not come out but stays with the condenser

Here are some tips to make the job easier.

1. Aside for the connection on the fan, don't forget the connection on the condenser passenger side bottom. This will clear most of the wires in the way.

2. Its key to keep the intercooler attached to the condenser. I did this by using a zip tie in the holes as a removed the four bolts holding the three together(radiator, intercooler and condense). I loosing all the bolts first and then as I removed each slide a zip tie connecting the intercooler and condenser together.

3. When your ready to take out the radiator your need to slide the intercooler and condenser down to clear piping. Remove radiator on the passenger side first and then driver.

4. Back to zip ties. On reason to tie the condenser and intercooler is that the clips on the condenser might come out and they can be a pain to get in when you are trying to get everything back together. The clip which seems to be the most prone to coming loose is the top driver side. The others seemed to stay put.

5. When you install you can go thru the top I did. First slide the driver side in at a slight angle over the condenser pipes and then work the radiator in. The most difficult part is to clear the turbo outlet on the intercooler, passenger side but you can clear it with patience.

6. When your ready to hook back up put the two main bolt for the radiator in but don't tighten all the way. Next remove each zip tie, top drive side first and then bottom passenger. Don't tighten till you get all those bolts in holding the three together.

Hope this help those attempting the job. One good then about the s60 are the bolts on the s70 which are always really rusted holding the radiator in are really easy to take out.
