Where is the shift lock override button on a 2005 XC90 V8 automatic transmission?
Also, I need to replace the shift lever because the button on the shift lever is broken and I get stuck in Park or Neutral intermittently. How do I find out what number transmission I have? It appears that I need the transmission number to order the right shift lever.
Thanks,
Peter
Where is the shiftlock override button?
If you hadn't found it by now, the ways I found to override the shiftlock is a) pop up the shifter bezel/boot and feel around the driver (left-foward) side of the shifter "box" inside the console. There's about a finger-sized depression with sort of a loop inside, slide the loop up or down, I don't recall which. It's easier with your left hand. Or b) take the steering column trim part off the bottom and pull the orange cable out of the ignition lock cylinder, push the cable manually.
Good luck!

Hi Chad:
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I took the whole console out a year ago when the car got stuck in PARK and found that loop you mentioned needed to be lubed. I did that, and the loop has worked fine since. Turning the ignition key to "on" moves a micro switch that moves the orange cable you mentioned, that then moves the loop. Periodic lube is required, but you won't hear that from Volvo.
Turns out that the latest issue, not being able to shift from Neutral to Park was caused by the broken internals of the button on the shift lever. Volvo won't tell you that either. I got a new shift lever, at only $92.00, from Voluparts that I will put in when it stops snowing here. Volvo wanted nearly $200.00. And despite what I read, one does not need the trans number to get the shift lever.
After reading what seemed like hundreds of threads, I finally learned that the yellow "top hat" under the console trim is actually a pin, that when removed, overrides the shift lock. Unfortunately, with the pin out one can shift in to any gear at any time. So once the shift lock is overridden it's best to reinsert the pin. Volvo tells you none of this either.
All in all, the shift system is a very poor design. Push one lock release button on the console in Toyotas and you are done. I have three Toyotas, the oldest is a 1991, and, by the way, none of the shift locks have ever required lube or an override, and all the shift levers are original.
Thanks again,
Peter
