new 2016 S80 oil and filter questions

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

new 2016 S80 oil and filter questions

Post by three_jeeps »

Greetings, first time volvo owner, loooong time saab owner. Am seeking advice regarding oil and filter for this car.

Source for good prices on OEM filter for this car? EEuroparts?
Best aftermarket filter for this car?

Volvo 'recommends' Castrol syntac for the vehicle. I assume 0W-40 is good all year round? or something like 10w30 for winter and 10W40 for summer perhaps better?

Where is the oil drain plug located? I have a hunch but a confirmation picture would be very helpful. (yea, I know...it is in the oil pan...)

Drain plug have washers that should be replaced when oil changed?

Anyone have any insight on using Mobil 1 instead of Castrol Syntac?

Thanks for insight/pointers/tips!

_John

aren't you worried about violating the warranty?

No. And I don't see how changing the oil before the factory specified 10K interval will void a warranty. I'll have receipts for everything, and I will put my credentials against anyone for changing oil.

I've lived through Saabs oil change recommended intervals, only to see the engines self destruct because of bad design that were sensitive to dirty oil affecting the recir system, and recent news from Audi and VW with their excessive oil consumption at 60-80K, along with other mfg engine oil related stories, makes me think that these intervals look good on paper with a clean engine on a test stand, but are worthless in the real world. Smaller engines work harder, generate more heat that breaks down the additives and vaporizes more volitals, that can adversely impact the engine.

It is my understanding that the engine in my car has been out a few years, so it will take some time to get historical info, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I never heard of any bad side effects from changing oil often....aside from slightly depleted bank account and a few more filters in land fills.

Changing your own oil will not void your warranty. Just keep records and receipts. I would not do the 10,000 mile oil change interval either unless it was all highway miles. I change mine every six months regardless of mileage. I do mostly short trips, 7 miles to work daily.

I can't offer info on the location of the drain plug but it should be facing the rear of the vehicle. Yes, there is a crush washer that should be replaced with each change. I buy filters three at a time from IPD. They come with washers for about $16. Mahle is what I use. I think they are the OEM manufacterer for Volvo.

I use Mobil 1 0w40. Just make sure any oil you use meets all requirements listed in your owners manual. You don't have to use Castrol. Castrol paid Volvo to have their name on the oil cap.

Thank you! OK, I forgot about IPD... Yea, I've used Mobil1 0w40 in my 04 Saab 95 since day 1. 120K miles later still working fine.
Hmmm really? I'd like to believe it was more than just advertising. Then again, it's all an illusion. Then again, Saab had in their manuals that they recommend M1 as the preferred oil.
