Re: Melted wires
Just a guess: fan motor seized up (bearing or sthg), causing too much amp draw, causing wires to melt and fuse to blow. the fuse should in theory prevent this from happening but if the wires are corroded or someone put in a wrong fuse the wire could still get too hot before the fuse goes.

The fuse on the fan is actually a fusible link in the wire that runs to the fan. There is no fuse in the fuse box for it. We have had a couple of members have their car actually catch on fire after the blower motor seized so it is a serious thing.
The fix will be to replace the blower and then repair the wiring that goes to it. Where did the wiring melt? If it was after the relay where the wires run down to the blower it is easy since those wires get changed along with the blower itself. If it was in the wiring leading up to the relay then it is a bit tougher since the wires go into a loom that runs along the top of the radiator and the loom will need to be split to get to them. Check all of the wires in the loom while you are there since when one gets hot enough to melt the insulation it typically melts the insulation on the wires around it.

I should have payed a bit more attention, I though you had an 850. The 70s do have a real fuse. Check the wiring as it goes into the relay closely but it sounds like you have the easy fix.

If I'm understanding everything correctly replacing the fan is exactly what needs to be done along with replacing any damaged wiring.

The typical failure is the bearings in the motor. Changing the assembly is the easiest way to go and they are fairly plentiful at Pick-N-Pull yards. Just make sure that the replacement spins freely. There are only four torx screws that hold the assembly in place and the bottom two screws don't need to be completely removed. The bottom holes in the shroud are slots that allow the entire shroud to be pulled up after the bottom screws are backed out a couple of turns.
The wiring comes out with the assembly and it just unplugs from the fan relay and then there is a second ground connection.
