95 850T No boost

Post by iruleyounow »

I was driving my car around today, went to change lanes and my car boosted normal. Then I went to change lanes again and the gauge barely went past the halfway mark into the white. I couldn't hear any turbo BOV noise or anything either. I floored it a few times and each time same result, virtually no boost, maybe 1-3psi. I got home and started looking at all the vacuum hoses and sure enough the one that goes to the top of the CBV was torn right off. So I got a new hose and replaced it, but that did nothing, the gauge still reads a small notch in the white. I then hooked up my OBD2 scanner and read the boost off of that and sure enough I was getting 9.5psi according to the ECU but the gauge on the dash had not changed. I drove it around and it just felt like it had no turbo at all. None of my other vacuum lines were bad from what I could see. I'm thinking a bad CBV, and maybe the diaphragm tore and popped that hose off. It did seem as though my car was a lot quicker and the boost came in relatively sooner than before right before this happened.

I hear no PSHHH sound lol. Am I on the right track here? Ill dig into it more tomorrow but just want to get an idea of what I need to check. I've read many other threads with this issue and it all seemed to either be the CBV or a bad vacuum/intercooler hose.

Check all the small vacuum/pressure lines from the TCV, carefully check the turbo intercooler pipes in inlet turbo pipe and connections. Also check the intercooler particularly along the bottom where it is more exposed for damage or cracks.

The CBV is a possible and also the TCV itself. They are prone to failure over time and the won't allow the turbo to boost.

I did check the bottom of the intercooler and I didnt see any holes or anything. I didn't check for collapsed hoses though so I will definitely do that. Is it okay to spray carb cleaner to find bad hoses or cracks?

I checked all the vacuum hoses, did a smoke test and used some carb cleaner. Everything checked out fine. I did under the turbo as well to a few of the vacuum hoses. When I started the car, I revved it up and got this really bad smell and my car stumbled a bit when I let off the gas. So I am going to take it to a exhaust shop and see if the converter is clogged. I assume so just by the symptoms but ill make sure before spending more money of course.

It's interesting that it was so sudden - from one lane to the next, so to speak. I'm looking forward to updates as well.

So I feel really stupid. I took off the heat shield above the turbo to get to everything, and after I lifted it off I noticed the waste gate arm wasn't attached. I put it back on and proceeded to check everything. Not really thinking anything of it. Flash forward 2 days later I'm laying in bed at 5 in the morning and I realized I never drove it after I did that. I just went out and sped around with full boost and pshhhh noises hahaha! So this whole time it was just the arm of the wastegate -_-. I'll be putting a little clip on it today! Thanks for the help guys.

No surprises here...I think clogged cats are the third triad in misdiagnosed faults, behind

1. O2 Sensor Bad (Autozone favorite)
B. Bad ECU - they tell you this, then when you get a 2000 estimate for the ECU plus flash, you run away so they don't have to tell you they don't know whats wrong with your car
(iii) Clogged cat.
