2005 v70 occasional almost stall while driving

Post by tecljc4 »

This occurs maybe once a day sometimes less sometimnes more. I will be cruising to work or home (mostly what I use the car for) and I will coast for a little and then when I try accelerating the engine feels like it wants to stall but then picks up and carries on normally. The check engine light comes on sometimes afterwards usualy about 5 minutes later. One "dealer" said I need to replace the pcv hose but that doesn't seem to make sense to me. Also I know the timimg belt is due. 109k miles now on the vehicle could that be causing this issue. The check engine light goes out of I fill the fuel tank!~?!

My 05 s80 2.5T had a similar problem last year. Would sputter and stall at red light. Check engine light would come on shortly after restart. Immediately after the incident, I read the codes and it came back as a fuel rail pressure sensor, signal too high. I replaced it with new oem replacement, cleared the codes, and haven't had such problem since.

I just had a similar problem on my 2005 xc70 2.5t 109k miles. I got no codes, but it ended up being the fuel pressure sensor. There is a post where other people offered ideas of what possible things it could be. After cooling it took about 5 min to replace.

I'm not sure if your car is a turbo or not however I've seen non turbo cars with this condition that eventually will stall when stopping. The issue is simply a dirty throttle that gets gunked up not allowing air to pass through.

I did a quick blog post a couple years back which can viewed here:

I hope that helps!

You need to read the codes when the check engine light comes on. Diagnosing by symptom doesn't work unless you know the cars intimately.

Lashes to the dealer for that suggestion.

Many codes will auto reset of the fault condition isn't detected after so many cycles. Being correlated with fuel fill suggests that it might be a vacuum leak in the evap circuit but the code will tell you thst

If you are going to change the fuel rail pressure sensor, change the fuel filter first. It's cheaper and easier and is the most likely culprit for causing the failure of that sensor. At the very least, it is due in all likelihood.
