Crazy AC problem

You remove a shim. The shim spaces the driven plate AWAY from the drive pulley face so removing a shim lets it get closer.

I support the comments of jimmy57. I did mine last year and fabricated the pulling tool to undo the clutch assembly. You have to tilt the compressor down to have access to the clutch. Then you use the puller to remove the clutch and shims. Not that easy for a beginner. If someone does it within one hour, give him a tip because it isn't that easy on jacks. It does the trick though.

Thanks guys! I think I may go the "ghetto-tastic" way, especially if it will do the trick. It all depends on whether or not we can get to the compressor easily. I popped the hood this morning to take a peak and was surprised at how much I could see of it. Now, being able to do anything to it is another story...

Now, again, I'm a complete girl about this, but the close up picture of the zip ties doesn't look like it's closing the gap at all. I suppose if this is easy to do, I may go this route. You don't need any kind of glue doing it this way, which is a plus. I haven't had the chance to measure the gap yet, so I don't know how much space I have to make up for. But from the looks of things, these ties aren't closing too wide of a gap.

Clutch gap should be between .012 inches to .020 inches. It is very small, that is why a bread clip or a zip tie will work. The clutch will not engage when it is at .024, so it is a small number...

Mine did the same thing, removing a shim or two worked like a charm. A lot of garages don't even realize this fixes this problem, make them aware and they are likely to do the work as you can teach an old dog new tricks.
