Engine swap - need advice

Post by LowNSlow99Volvo »

Ok here it is, I have what I thought to be a 1999 S70 GLT, turned out to be a 1998 S70 GLT. I have had it about 2 years, 2.4 LPT (B5254T)motor AND trans have 240,xxx miles. It's already dropped about 3 inches with coil overs and lower profile tires on stock wheels. I Love it! But blew the motor up driving down the e-way. SO I purchased a 1999 2.3HPT (B5234T3) motor and trans w/ 85,xxx miles. HERE LIES MY PROBLEM! I thought I was buying the same year motor and trans and could just swap and plug and play basically. I figured I'd have to have a new ECU or computer or get mine redone. But basically what I'm trying to ask am I going to run into a bunch of mods or problems to put this motor in my car

That's a major swap because the 1999 motor is fly by wire and the 1998 chassis isn't

Doable, but so is growing potatoes in your own poop on Mars.

Sell the 1999 and source a 1998 for a swap that is more like.... A swap

Should not be that bad. You will need a different mount or two. You will also need to disconnect the VVT cam. You will use your current intake because it has the throttle body you have.

There are a few other things that has to be done but it isn't to bad.

If you want to make it easy on yourself sell the 2.3 to someone. They are desired and the 2.4 are easier to find and should be cheaper.

Wait, Robert,.the 1999 motor won't have a place to put the distributor, will it? I think that is a show stopper.

People do this swap a lot, it is for the most part plug and play, the major adjustments are the cooling lines along the back of the engine and the mounts. I think the holes are there for the distributor, that one is not much of an issue. You maybe use the cam(s) from the previous engine. I haven't done it myself and I don't know the details but there is tons of info out there, search "RN swap" over at Volvospeed.

Not too hard to do I put an 04 motor in a 94, there are some differences but not too many, you knock out the distributor cover plug and put in a seal and that is done, use a 99/2000 front mount bracket and move the cooling lines you may be able to remove the vvt solenoid or not but can just disconnect it-ARD has a video and there are lots of write ups on VOlvospeed as mentioned, you can get really creative and swap the whole accessory package over too

I've Been doin a lot of research since I posted this. But another question, are all the suspension parts for the c70 the same? If so, I'm thinking a different direction of progress. I can swap my coilovers and brake kit and all the odd and ends stuff onto a c70. Found a 99 with blown head gasket for good price and I can literally just drop the low mileage T5 motor I bought into that (it has same motor already in it just a lot more miles) I'm not the smartest car person, so trying to make things EASY. ADVICE OR COMMENTS?
